So I have finally given in to modern technology and decided to get a smartphone.

O2 have offered me a free upgrade to an Iphone 4 or a Samsung Galaxy Ace 2.

With the iPhone I would get 250 minutes of free calls, free texting, free wifi and 1gb of internet usage for £32 per month

With the Samsung unlimited free calls, free texts and 1gb of internet for £20 month.

I will be using it to check football scores, tweet, check email, bet and that's about it.

Also hopefully use it abroad.

Which should I go for and why?

Is 1gb per month a lot or a little?

How much internet does clicking refresh on Betfair use?

Everyone who has an iphone will say iphone and everyone who has the ace 2 will say the Samsung.

Personally I think you'll be happy with either as they're both brill.

Obvious choice is the Samsung as it's cheaper. Ignore the free wifi bit with the iphone. That's the same for both phones.

1Gb is loads as long as you're not downloading stuff or watching bbc iplayer type things. I have 750MB and I never get near that just browsing, checking emails placing a few bets etc.

Don't use it abroad unless you're connected to wifi. You'll cry when you get the bill.

this, both of them do what you want so I'd have thought the unlimited calls with less cost would be a better option.

Doesn't O2 have a day-use thing for data when you're abroad (in Europe), which is about £5 a day?

The iPhone will probably be a bit easier for a luddite.  If you go the iPhone route make sure they give you the iPhone 4S and not the older iPhone 4.

My Mum's got the Galaxy Ace 2 and hasn't got a clue what to do with smart phones, but it isn't really an issue.

Maybe it could be a problem for other handsets, but it definitely isn't for that one.

Both seem more than ideal. For sheer ease of use, especially if its your first one, I think the iPhone is a bit better if you don't mind the price difference.

This particular debate often gets as angry and polorised as the Thatcher debate. I know so many people who get really angry when other people choose the brand they don't.

Id get the iphone based purely on the likelyhood of you finding an emergency charger when your battery is low in pubs, restaurants, round friends etc. Cant overstate how important that turns out to be, most pubs in London will have 1 behind the bar or find one for you

Depends what you want from it Keith. If it's just browsing the web, checking your email, watching the odd video, arguing about Thatcher on here, and placing some bets - then either will be adequate.

It's only if you have specific needs that one might out-perform the other.  In fact, I'm a big fan of android, but most people I see with android phones aren't getting half the functionality out of them and they could do just as well (if not better) with an iphone, as Bazza said, they're probably more intuitive for a luddite...

I only prefer android phones because they're more flexible and allow you to tweak and fiddle with them.

Basically, if you struggle with technology at all, then iphone is probably the better option for you.

Actually this

Modern technology is amazing but there still isnt a smartphone which has a battery to sustain the amount of use most people give it. If you are browsing the interweb a lot, the battery will get used up quite fast
