Worth pointing out that that comment relates to a season ticket price, not a single game price.  Had to look the link up (clearly don't' read the mirror) but have known for ages that German ticket prices are cheap.

the whole german approach to football (the are community institutions, not necessarily businesses..) just owns everything else in europe tbh.

I can see one big downside to this.

An 18 year old will just never get to see his team, because the season ticket holders just auto renew every season. And he will be on a waiting list for 50 years.

Will lead to:

1. The average age at the stadium will be very old.

2. A ticket touts paradise. Lots of young wealthy people without tickets driving up the black market price massively.

I was able to get a season ticket when I lived in Germany for Hannover 96 very easily (they are decent midtable side). Attitude to season tickets is very different in general, I would say the proportion of match goers who are season ticket holders is considerably less than in the UK.

If your point is 'it would happen in England though', then I think you're absolutely correct.

Yes Camel is right.  Unless we can conjure up 120,000 seater stadiums over night then there is only winner when prices are artifically low and demand is high.  The touts.

Of course the market driven solution is for away fans to tell West Ham to get stuffed when they charge £50 for a ticket.  But if West Ham can sell them, then fair play to them.

this is very well written and informed. I saw A LOT of people claiming that German football has no problems with hooliganism 'unlike England', but I know one of the biggest (former) hooligans in German football personally, and his opinion of that sentiment was 'horseshit, it's as bad as it's ever been, just people don't realise/don't want to see it'

There has to be a check on this though surely?  The opposite to this approach is Arsenal or Chelsea who charge basically whatever they can because they can still sell out and we effectively still get the same thing.  The average age at the stadium is fairly old, it is still a ticket touts paradise and no young or working class people can afford to go.  If you spend anytime in the Holloway Road area of London close to the Emirates when there is an Arsenal game on the entire demographic of the area changes temporarily.  Realistically no young 18yo Arsenal fans do get to see their team unless their parents are fairly wealthy.
