Congratulations to David Chiu, Winner of the Event 23: $2,500 Seven Card Stud ($145,520)

WInner David Chiu

After three days of intense poker action, a winner has been crowned in the Event 23: $2,500 Seven Card Stud event with David Chiu capturing his fifth WSOP gold bracelet.

Three days ago 246 players took to the felt to play the only seven card stud tournament of the series; and thus technically the Stud Championship. Although there was controversy over the diminishing amount of stud tournaments at the WSOP and the decrease in buy-in from $10,000 to $5,000 to $2,500, a plethora of pros came out to play - some of which make this stud event their only appearance at the WSOP.

As the tournament progressed through the first two days there would be ten individuals remaining eyeing the prestigious bracelet, and once the final table was reached, the eight remaining players were mixed game specialists with eight of the 12 bracelets on the table coming in a form of Seven Card Stud. Young guns Adam Friedman and Matthew Ashton would fall first before Gary Benson's pursuit to claim bracelets 17 years apart ended in 6th. 2010 Player of the Year Frank Kassela fell next before three-time bracelet winner Michael Mizrachi exited in 3rd to leave a battle between 2009 winner Freddie Ellis, David Chiu and Scott Seiver. Unfortunately for the 78-year old Ellis, his run would end in 3rd place to see Chiu and Seiver enter heads-up play fairly even in play after 138 hands of final table play so far.

In a battle of youth versus experience, Chiu and Seiver swapped chips back-and-forth before Chiu slowly began to claw his way into the lead eventually holding a near four-to-one advantage only to see Seiver claim a double to give him some hope. However the match would end after 89 intense hands of heads-up play when Chiu spiked a bigger two pair on seventh to send Seiver out in 2nd.

This was Liverpudlian Ashton's 3rd WSOP final in 23 events, by far the best overall British Performance in what has been a disappointing series for the UK so far

Event #26: Seniors No-Limit Hold'em Championship

    Buy-in: $1,000
    Prizepool: $3,966,300
    Entries: 4,407
    Remaining: 640

4407 entries!!

Every year at the World Series of Poker thousands of young guns flock to the poker Mecca to test their mettle against five-bets, flop floats, and flush draws, but the Seniors Championship offers a reprieve from the hyper-aggression that has come to dominate the game. For players of a certain generation, those can still remember when the third raise always meant aces in the hole, the Seniors event is a tried and true tradition, and the last bastion of A-B-C poker in a world turned on its head by the online style.

Today, a total of 4,407 seniors took their seats bright and early, besting the Seniors Championship record set just last year, and nearly topping the unprecedented number of entrants to play on a single day established by this year's historic "Millionaire Maker" event. With seniors spread throughout the Rio's multiple venues, including the Pavilion, the Brasilia Room, and the Amazon Room, the atmosphere here today has rivaled that of the Main Event, as the crowded halls and throngs of interested onlookers suggest that a major event is being contested.

A number of notable names from the professional ranks were spotted early on in Day 1, with Johnny Chan, Chad Brown, Susie Isaacs, Men Nguyen, and defending champion Allyn Jaffrey Shulman all trying their best to run up a chip stack and make a deep run. Unfortunately for this pack of pros, Day 1 was the end of the line, but plenty of top-flight players managed to bag and tag after eleven full hours of play.

Young Ji (51,800), "Captain" Tom Franklin (48,100) Hoyt Corkins (48,100), Robert Varkonyi (39,900), John Strzemp (32,700), and T.J. Cloutier (29,400) are some of the more notable names still alive after Day 1, and with former Main Event winners and bracelet holders still in the hunt, tomorrow's Day 2 promises to be action packed.

Thought we might have had a fun sweat, but nay

For the second straight year, James Dempsey has bubbled this tournament.

He limped in under the gun and Viacheslav Zhukov raised from UTG+2. Maria Ho called from the small blind, Robert Mizrachi called from the big blind, and Dempsey called all in for his remaining 1,000 after his original call.

The flop was checked around and when the turn fell, Ho checked to Mizrachi who bet. Zhukov folded, Ho called, and the river completed the board. Ho check-folded to Mizrachi's bet this time and Mizrachi tabled for kings full.

Dempsey couldn't beat it and for the second straight year is the bubble boy of this event.
Robert Mizrachi   339,500   99,500
James Dempsey   0   -6,000
