I think Watford are going to have a slight issue with the home grown rule.  It's making Deeney and McGugan pretty hard to drop.  Whether this makes them take their places for granted remains to be seen.

Also I am sad to see it is limited Battochio's place in the team.  We weren't even able to name him in the squad for Saturday, and we can't swap him for McGugan due to home grown rule.  Abdi will never be dropped, so it would mean Iriney being kicked out of the squad to accomodate him.   Hmm.

What's the home grown rule?

I think you need to have 6 players trained in England in the team/substitutes.

Specifically six players who have been developed through an Academy/Youth level at any British club in the match day 18

So would Nahki Wells count, even though he is a Bermudan international for example?

Nationality is not the issue, its where they were developed. If Wells was at an English youth side thats fine

(one of the many reasons a team like Arsenal takes so many French, Spanish kids at 13-16 years old is for this reason )

Don't really understand the logic of the rule - I would get it if they had to be British (don't think they can do that anyway due to EU law) as it helps the national teams, but this rule just seems to encourage big clubs to pillage other european acadamies, thus meaning that those clubs don't even get much of a transfer fee for unearthing a young gem.

Thanks, didn't have a clue about this. We should be okay despite having 2 irish players who i presume do not count ?

If they were developed in the League of Ireland, then they count as not developed at home

Most are developed in England though

Yes as a secondary issue but in practice only the very biggest English clubs can get talented European Kids over at the age of 16 or under. The the key point about the match day rule is to encourage, long term, investment in UK club Academies. This is why, for example, spending on Academies is added to revenue for FFP calculations and not added to cost.

Got to love FFP if that is true.

Club A can fritter away £50 million on players, and also pump £50 million into the acadamy and be £100 million in debt and be fine

Club B can spend £10 million on players and be £10 million in debt and get a fine.

"this is because UEFA have allowed clubs to exclude certain expenditure from the calculations. UEFA are keen to develop the game and don't want the FFP rules to constrain clubs from investing and developing - without any exclusions a club building a new stadium or new stand would be hit by an FFP penalty (the cost of the development would mean the club reported a large financial loss). Clubs can therefore exclude infrastructure development costs and youth development/community development costs. Manchester City announced that they should be able to exclude around £10m a year as a result of the youth/community exclusion."

We are forecasting just over £8m loss.

Bridcutt will go in January for about £4M though to halve that. Sad times for Champ clubs!
