Hey
So despite living in Glasgow my whole life and being less than an hour away, I have seen a grand total of 1 show at the Edinburgh festival lifetime. Hoping to make a better effort this year and make a few trips through so I'm looking for recommendations on what to see
Please list your recommendations here of anything you have seen or heard is good, preferably with a link to their page on the fringe website

A great year to go, my highlights would be.
Sadowitz is doing a magic show - he is one of the best slight of hand magicians in the world, not to mention the greatest stand up comic I have ever seen.

Scroobius Pip's spoken word shows are always funny, witty and excellently delivered.

And for me the must see is Alexi Sayle - the return.

It's tricky without some indication of your comedy tastes and sensibilities.
McIntyre or Franky Boyle?
John Bishop or Tim Vine?
As general recommends though...
Gerry Sadowitz is tremendous although not for the easily/mildly difficult to be offended.
Stewart Lee for those who appreciate comedic structure
https://www.edfringe.com/search#q=show_performer%3AStewart%20lee&fq=dates%3A%5B2013-07-31T06%3A00%3A00Z%20TO%202013-09-05T06%3A00%3A00Z%5D
Beasts are a sketch troupe and if that's not your bag then don't bother, but I'd take these over WitTank or The geek the Geordie and the Ginger any day

I've recommended Max & Ivan elsewhere

Went yesterday with the gf, drove through at 1pm hoping to catch out of the Blue, really should have made it on time as we got to the general area by 1.30 however parking is a fkn nightmare here!! No obvious spaces on the streets, we saw 1 car park that was full with 2 cars waiting to get in, waited for 5 mins, no sign of anyone leaving so we bailed and continued the search for spaces. Randomly drove around until we found an NCP, not ideal but as it was a race against time we ditched the car there and Iphone mapped our way to assembly square.
Got there at 2.05 and didnt have tickets yet so missed the show, they didnt want to sell us tickets after it had started incase they wouldnt let us in so Ill have to catch out of the blue next time.
Think I roughly know some better places to park now, left the car in the NCP car park for around 5 hours and got stung for £15 sigh. Also was a bit of a trek to find the car park again as I didnt pay much attention to where it was or how to get back there lol
Used the "Nearby Now" part of the fringe app to find something to go see, settled on a comedy showcase
https://www.edfringe.com/whats-on/comedy/hilarity-bites-comedy-club-showcase
Despite having around 30 mins to get here and the app having a map of all the locations on it, we still managed to be 5 mins late for this. The location was on a lower street level and I obv took went across the higher street level. If you dont know your way around these things then you're just gonna get chewed up and spit out!
Managed to get into this one despite being late. Format was a host, who was quite funny himself and has his own show elsewhere but I forgot his name (Scottish guy, short ginger hair), introducing 5 acts who all had their own shows elsewhere.
First up was John Gavin, who I got a flyer from claiming to have a daily show at 4.45pm in the beehive inn but its nowhere to be found on the website listing. Did some jokes about being the grumpy father/husband. Pretty good, would go see his show if it was close by.
Next was Fin Taylor
https://www.edfringe.com/whats-on/comedy/fin-taylor-cramp
Did some geek jokes that I found hilarious. Would deffo go see his show and I think all 20-somethings that spent their childhood watching tv and playing computer games would really like him.
There was some young English guy up next doing a bit about finding a job after uni. The joke itself was kinda funny but he seemed pretty nervous and his delivery was terrible. Was clearly the worst of the 5, would give him a miss. Dont remember his name and not gonna look for it.
https://www.edfringe.com/whats-on/comedy/ellievision
was on next, apparently she's been on tv a few times on stuff like 8 out of 10 cats but I dont think Ive seen her before. She was the best of the 5 and well worth seeing again although her solo show seems to be on a bit early for my liking!
https://www.edfringe.com/whats-on/comedy/markus-birdman-happily-ever-after
was on last and was also really good. Did an outrageous joke about guys sucking each other off that I was almost crying at and looking around the room, everyone under the age of 40 found hilarious but 40+ werent laughing at all :/
We had planned to see a Ghostbusters musical which turned out to be very close to where we were but had 90 mins to kill so decided we should stray too far away looking for a show and ended up just going to the next show in the same room as the comedy showcase was just in. Some tall dude in a USA sports jack (
https://www.edfringe.com/whats-on/comedy/bronston-jones-life-s-short-i-m-not-free
) was handing out flyers for LOLolympics
https://www.edfringe.com/whats-on/comedy/lolympics-live-free
so we went back in.
The tall dude (Bronston) and some guy from belfast with a ridiculous beard (
https://www.edfringe.com/whats-on/comedy/martin-mor-how-do-you-like-your-blue-eyed-boy-mister-death
) were hosting and hyped it up as some sort of interactive show, splitting the room into team based on country with the promise of Gold medal stickers for participation and a winner crowned at the end, it was nothing like that.
There were lots of kids in with their parents at this show and the hosts explained that while it is rated, the acts will probably swear. They said that they think the best way to break the tension is to have a kid swear first so they brought up some 10 year old English girl to the stage, got her parents permission to let her swear just this once but she refused to swear so they had to bring up this other kid, 13 year old English boy, got his parents permission, got the countdown 3....2.....1 "Oh bugger". English kids are so polite these days, I overheard the hosts saying how a kid from the day before went onstage and said c*nt lol.
For a show that was rated PG and the cheesy/terrible intro from the hosts I expected the acts to be terrible but the first one on was a "big" african-Canadian woman who has moved to London who spent the whole time doing jokes about sex and/or race and swore all the way through it lol. Pretty sure most of the kids just wouldnt have got some of the jokes and the parents mightve been like "WTF!!", didnt get her name so cant link her show.
After that was
https://www.edfringe.com/whats-on/comedy/tanyalee-davis-big-trouble-in-little-gina
A "little person", like the 1st comedienne, she launched straight into little people jokes and sex jokes swearing her way through them. Kind of made it funnier with the kids around not knowing if they can laugh at the jokes or not.
Both acts were quite funny and Ok for somethign to see if you're in the area and nothing else planned but I wouldnt go out my way to see them. Id also avoid lolympics as the hosts were pretty cheesy and bad and not funny and spent so long on stage that only 2 acts got on. The team thing was completely pointless also as both acts were canadian and, apart from bringing the kids on stage to swear, they didnt have any audience participation.
With some time to kill we got some food before going to see
https://www.edfringe.com/whats-on/comedy/who-ya-gonna-call
a comedy/musical based on the ghostbusters movie. This was pretty much next door to where we were so it wasnt too hard to find and we got there 10 mins early. The Iphone app said it was in the "top room" so we went to the top floor and walked in on a standup show from a guy mostly making jokes about life in Dubai and some terrible 1 liners. We thought this was the end of the show and since there was only around 5 people in watching at the time we went in and sat down thinking we were early for the seats. Turns it, Ghostbusters mustve been moved as when this guy finished at exactly the time ghostbusters was starting, the host came back on and introduced another act. I whispered to my gf that we were in the wrong place and had to leave when the other guy was coming to the stage before he starts, she was too embarrassed and didnt want to but when the guy came on I stood up and nudged her out the door. The comedian and the host stood in silence as we shuffled out lol, was a little embarrassing but its way better than sitting in there with 5 other people watching something we dont wanna be at, Im also certain at least 2 of the other people in the crowd made the same mistake as us but didnt get out"
Another lesson of the fringe, dont walk into a show unless you're 100% certain you're in the correct room!
Ghostbusters turned out to be on the middle floor, we heard the theme music as we went downstairs so went in and had to stand at the back as there were no seats (maybe around 40 people inside). I didnt care much for the songs but the show overall was good with some laughs however the room was joke warm inside, as were all the other smaller rooms we were in before. It can be hard to find somewhere to buy bottles of water in some of the less central locations, Id recommend making sure you have some to take into every show just incase.
Ghostbusters clashed with 3 or 4 other shows that I wanted to see so it means Ill deffo go back at least 1 more time and hopefully 2 or 3 more and catch the stuff I missed and any other good shows I hear about before then.
4-8pm is quite hard to schedule for as so many of the shows clash and you also need to factor in where they are and travel time to each location. The Iphone app is good for this as it shows everything in your favourites list by time and how long its on for and lets you plan it out a bit better. We wanted to see David Baddiel (cheers Camel) at 7.30 and since he clashed with loads of recommended shows between 6.15 and 9 we decided that it would be our last show of the day. With 90 to spare until it started we went to get tickets and planned to go and find the car, get it out of the NCP and park it to a bunch of parking spaces next to where Baddiel was playing. It tooks us 15 mins to get back to where the car was and then we spent the rest of the time driving around looking for spaces and getting caught in traffic. We got to where we had seen lots of spaces earlier and obviously it was completely full and the street parking there was for permit holders only. Drove around and couldnt find a space anywhere so at 7.29 took my chances in the permit holders section and rushed into Baddiel a few minutes late. By far the best show of the day, really enjoyed it and well worth the £15. There looked to be over 200 people inside, I think he is only on for another few days so anyone planning to make the trip should go see him while they can.
Overall had a good time, probably ditch the car next time and just get last train home. Will also plan better and probably see more ticketed shows. Will report back with anything else I see.

Just a very thin "I have a GF" brag imo
