That link doesn't really answer the question though because kids in the States aren't off from end of May until September....they get 6 weeks the same as UK.  The answer is a bit complicated Brookie as it differs from state to state.  My nieces and nephews go to school in Florida and Georgia which are the two areas closest to Orlando.  Gergia this year were off from the middle/end of June and went back last week.  Florida kids overlapped by three weeks and go back next week I think but it might be the week after.  If you want UK kids holidays and to miss the US kids holidays I think late August is best bet but it might all change next year.

The summer break kind of fitted for what my friends kids are off in SF, they're off for ages in the summer, about 8 weeks, maybe 9.

September is probably a safe bet

Not sure about the rest of the states, but Ohio is off from June 1st to August 27th this year and it'll be in or around the same next year.  If you're looking to avoid their holidays, then regardless of where you're going, September is the time to go.
