I actually used the check in dark move last night in a live tourny and it worked a treat!
Although i may add ive also been caught on it aswell.
It was a new player, i could sence he had a hand but once i checked in the dark he was totally bemused, lost all track and I took the pot down.
As said before its a great move but high risk, and if i was honest ive probably not broken even on this move.
