What would you guys oon here suggest is the way to bank roll a successfull poker campaign?

Is it possible to sustain a bank roll through tournament play only?  Or do you feel as if you have to play cash games to make up any tourney losses?

I personally rate myself as a half decent player, however as my job ain't the greatest in the world I tend to find that once I pay my bills I don;t have much left for poker and unless I pick up a win either on line or at a live event I am screwed after playing in a few tourneys!

And advice much appreciated.

If anyone wants to sponsor me to keep playing it would be much appreciated!!! Cool

dip your mates for a few quid after you've bored them to death with your bad beat stories, They'll be happy to hand over some dough just to get you to shut up.The guys on the £150/£300 FL table might sub you in a £1.20 tourney if you bug them for long enough!!! lol

It very much depends on what games you feel you are most successful at.

For a cash game, limit poker you are talking 300 big bets. Grind it. NL, you gotta have more for the increased variance, but many people play below that and feel it works for them.

STTs online, about 25 buyins seems to be the magic number, with an expected ROI of between 10-20% if you are half decent.

MTTs... I tend to enter tournaments that are less than 5% of my total roll. But I have the liberty of doing this. before I built my roll I was depositing spare cash and playing slightly outside of my roll to try and get somewhere.

Hi there, I suppose the problem with tournaments, multis at least, is that the paydays can be lumpy.

I would think you should consider building up a seperate poker bankroll from low level cash and SNGs and if successful using that to fund MTT play as and when

I think a seperate bankroll, however small it starts, is a must

I managed to build a very good bankroll from £200, If you make a good investment of £200 and play the nl £0.50 / £1.00 tables ( i play live ) you can grind this up to £1000 in about a week of solid play, TBH you could probably do it quicker if you are a better player and have a good run. My suggestion is buy in for the minimum or just above the minimum then be patient.

You must be honest about how good a player you really are in comparison to your opponents, know who you can outplay, know whi gambles and know who you want to be in pots with.

Just my friendly advice.

This is something I did last year, might help.

I had a very limited bankroll, about $200 in my account. Now I like to play MMT but could only really afford to play $5/$10 tourneys as it would kill my roll to fast otherwise.

I knew I needed to play the more expensive MTTs to have a good pay day. So I would take my bankroll to the cash tables, and when I had won the buy in to the tourney I had my eye on, I would leave. An example would be taking $140 to the 50/$1 and leaving as soon as I had it to $195, this way I was getting to play the $50+5 MTT for free, or at least it felt like it was free.

Now if my $140 started to go south on that particular day, I would miss the tourney out and just try to build my roll to were it was. But this happened very little as I would play like a rock in the cash games because I had a very specific target in mind..

Hope this helps

I play cash at $2/$4 level (although am considering going up to 3/6 level soon) and keep a bankroll of $4000.  When ever I get up to $6000 I withdraw $2000 to get me back down to $4000.  I also play multi's but never more than $100 ones at the moment, mostly $20-$30 rebuy events.

I've found this to be a very good system for me (haven't had to deposit since summer) since A)I have enough that if I have a bad few days I still have plenty in the account to play at my level, and B) I never really have enough in the account to tempt me to play higher stake poker, as I feel I'm not ready.

Some good options there guys and thanks for the suggestions.

At the moment I am doing as Bundle does, but sometimes I find myself becoming frustrated by that.

I think I need to come up with a plan that I am going to stick to.  I also think its important to keep a proper record of win to loss ratio.

One of the things that I find about playing online at Bet Fred - where I am a regular! Is that I tend not to have much control over my cash, simply because its too easy to deposit extra funds when I am on tilt.

I think what I might do is uninstall all the crap sites from my PC and maybe have only 1 or 2 really good sites.

Any suggestions on the best online rooms to play at?

My advice for bankroll builders. STT are the way to go IMO.

to be honest, i doubt ill ever be able to build a bank roll, since:

1/ i hate playing on line, i find it the most boring thing in the world! - and this seems to be the best place to build one up, so ive no chance there!

2/ i never ever play Cash games live, i hate playing cash live! - this seems to be the second best place to build a roll from, so again no chance there!

3/ i only ever play live, and its always MTT's unless its a home game, but i dont class a home game as a tourney i class it as a night out with mates are booze!

so my question is this, is it possible to build a bank roll from only every playing Live MTT's...only?

Oh aye it's pssible.

It'll just take longer and with bigger swings than online playing STT.

When some of the older guys started playing poker in the pre-internet era a lot of them built up a roll playing small re-buy events regularly.

I'm sure plenty folk do it nowadays too (or try)

It's definately possible but you will have to play a lot and cash consistently which is not that difficult in low buy in live mtt's with a tight game.

In reply to glasgowbandit, i am mid way through a bankroll rebuilding excercise and i have tried a few new things. Previously i would just play rock solid straight up 0.25/0.50 NLHE and $5/$10/$20 stts, and i know i can grind out a profit on these. But i find it painfully boring, so this time i played $5/$10/$20 mtts with around 100/150 runners as i felt my mtt play has improved to the point where i have a decent shout in the higher buy in mtt's but at the lower level buy ins i'm one of the favourites (i think so anyway).  Basically i can count on a minimum of 2 out 10 final tables at this level and the rewards are obviously far better than making the cash in say 4or5 out of 10 stts. I also enjoy the game far more.

I also take plenty of shots at sats to bigger mtt's where the standard is usually piss poor and a result in one the bigger tourneys you are laughing.

Some good advice here, im yet too start a bankrool of my own, an it does seem like its never going to happen, im good at cash games on and offline so i should get somewere soon eh? Smiley

Just abit of advice to Scottish Dave, Well 1st of al yes you can build a roll from MTT's only but IMO your playing MTT's just for entertainment an if you hit the money its a bonus, but TBH i wouldnt think of building a bankroll if i was you, your attitude aint right (no disprespect) but it almost sounds like you dont like poker lol you dont like cash online or mtt's online or stt's online you also dont like cash games offline, what do you like besides mtt's ? roullette Cheesy personaly m8 i think you should make it your goal to maybe leave the mtt's for a while an concentrate on a certain cash game an see how good you get etc you might find thats the way for you an start realy making some money.

hi mate, no opinions are taken the wrong way mate, so dont worry about that, advice is healthy.

Just to let you know, i dont play poker to make money, i play poker cos i enjoy the game. So i dont feel the need to concentrate on cash games to build a bank roll, i dont particularly need a bankroll, i was just enquiring as to what people though if i did want to start one.

Another thing, nothing on this earth will ever stop me playing this wonderful game, i love it more than anything in the world - trust me, just ask Snowball! lol

i dont hate Online cash / STT / MTT i just find that since ive been playing them for 3 years now, i find them very boring, just sitting there staring at a screen for hours on end, not talking to anyone, i also think another reason for this, is that ive started playing a hell of a lot more live tourneys, and find then so much better, as you get a great laugh with your mates, and can have a drink etc etc, Plus when your live you meet so many new faces and some real charactors at the tables, when you beat someone live after playing them out of a great pot, it feels so much more rewarding. So i think this is maybe the main reason ive gone right off the online gaming.

as for Live cash gaming, i dont like it as id rather walk into a club and know precisely how much im going to spend, in a cash game you can lose a fortune, and i dont like this aspect, every chips has a cash equivilant, i dont like this. if i play a MTT i know im only going to spend £20 say for hours of poker.

This is how and why i play the way i play.

in the past 9 thurdays ive attended CinCins ive made 7 final tables and cashed several times(1st 3rd 4th etc), even winning it last night. The satisfaction of last nights victory will remain with me forever, and no amount of money i win on a cash game will ever top that. (in short ive forked out £450 in buy ins since CinCins has opened, and won £1475 - thats a profit of £1025, although i should use this to start a bank roll, id rather just go out the next day and buy loads of stuff lol)

Thanks again for your advice, however i know ive found the correct blend for me and i doubt ill change it.
