We will be considering refunds for materially affected players. "Materially affected" means you missed a considerable number of hands and lost a significant portion of your chip stack due to blinds and antes. If you believe you were materially affected by this issue, please email us with the following subject line:
"REFUND: T#_________, $X+Y, User ID"
Where "________" is the Tournament ID, "X+Y" is the buy-in of the tournament, and "USERID" is your PokerStars User ID.
For example, "REFUND: T#123456780, $20 + 2, KidJoker"
For multiple tournament refund requests, please note additional tournaments in the text of your email. For example:
T#123456780, $20 + 2
T#123456781, $10 + 1,
T#123456782, $50 + 5
etc.
If you do not know the Tournament ID, you can find it in the PokerStars software using the playing audit feature. From the PokerStars Lobby screen, select:
'Requests’ → ‘Playing History Audit...'
Please also be aware that your refund request may take a few days to be processed.

Its years since I encountered a problem in a tournament on Stars.
Did they give chip count compensation until recently?

they sorted it all out as fairly as possible + it was all automated so you didn't have to do algebra and send 400 lines of info

Would you get compensation if you sat out for, say an hour, and then came back having lost 1/4 of your chips and played on.

not if you ticked sit out yourself, if you lost connection probably not, if it's anything related to stars side you would get some kind of compensation. often if you are not a regular complainer and it wasn't a stars wide problem stars might even give a few fpps or a ticket just something to show good faith. it's not like stars used to have many problems if at all whilst running 100K+ players online at once for 5 years.
this whole 'materially affected' phrase is new and seems just part 1 of fobbing you off and not refunding at all. oh you weren't quite affected enough eh...

Probably another reason why they've introduced this rule

Oooo wouldn't it be fun if they had a glitch in Spin and goes and everyone got jackpots for an hour!
