Should the QPR game go ahead today?
«

With the dreadful news that an Air Asia flight, with over 160 souls on board, is missing, should today's QPR game go ahead?
Air Asia sponsor QPR, & Air Asia's founder, Tony Fernandes, is QPR's majority shareholder.
Common sense, decency, & respect, surely demands it's postponement?

Not sure about postponement, but going ahead without the sponsor's logo on the shirts, perhaps? I don't know whether it's right to do a minute's silence or a black armband if nobody knows what has happened yet?

It's very awkward, & subjective, but that seems to me to be the worst possible option - almost as if we want to pretend it never happened, & drop the name to hide our embarrassment.
I agree that as to not knowing how the whole thing has panned out, wearing black armbands is a little premature.

I don't see how postponing the game achieves anything.

100% up to Tony Fernandes in my opinion. If he wants it off, nobody should question him. If he wants the show to go on, then the show should go on. I can see arguments for both.

And if they postpone this match, do they keep postponing them until the plane is found, or it is proven what has happened?

I don't see how postponing the game achieves anything.
It certainly won't achieve anything material, but it feels very disrespectful to me.
Tough spot for QPR & the football authorities, to be fair.

Isn't a one minutes silence the correct thing? It isn't really a club tradegy, so don't see the need for a postponement. Though the businesses are related through the sponsorship, surely Tony Fernandez views them as separate businesses?
Is it disrespectful for Air Asia to carry on flying whilst this tragedy is unfolding? If you aren't calling for them to stop flying, then you are on fairly ropey ground?
Having said all that if Mr Fernandez asks to postpone, I don't think anybody should refuse the request.

I'm really not sure what to think.
Continuing to fly is one thing, a football game, with the crowd hooting & hollering & shouting obsceneties & all sorts, feels rather different to me.
Whatever QPR decide, they'll get some heat, I fancy.

Postponing the game would be a huge overreaction imo
Who would it really benefit? The family members of the missing passengers aren't thinking about a football match thousands of miles away.
The owner of Air Asia hot footing it to Asia to try and sort this out rather than sipping champagne in the directors box I think would be appropriate.

Wouldn't grounding all of their aircraft be more appropriate?

What's this?
A football match?
Crowd all hooting and hollering?
Obscenities and all sorts?
At a time like this?
Disgraceful!

There was a minute of applause at Loftus Road for the people lost.
How on earth is that appropriate?
I know why they choose applause instead of silence, but surely on an occasion such as this no one would spoil the silence, would they?

Agree. Not sure how a minute of applause is appropriate. Minute of silence surely.
An air disaster for your sponsor certainly merits a minute of silence for the dead, but football has disappeared up it's own backside with minute silences, minute applauses and minutes of applause during games. The frequency of these reduces their impact imo. Often it feels to me like the people driving it do it for their own egos and attention seeking.
Our former player Clarke Carlisle was involved in an accident last week. The next morning some Watford fans were trying to instigate a minute of applause during the Wolves game "especially since the game is on TV". Seems hollow to me.
