I put the radio on at about 5am this morning to hear that another airliner has 'lost contact' with air traffic control.

I'm hoping, but realistically there can't be much hope can there?

Zero hope, I'm afraid, Tom.

There are now unconfirmed reports that the wreckage has been sighted.

There is - or I think there is - quite an interesting moral dilemma, too.

Air Asia sponsor QPR, a Premier League Football Team, due to play this afternoon, & the Chairman of QPR is also the Founder & majority Shareholder in Air Asia. Seems to me to be a really awkward spot.

Also a bit scary seeing pilots disagree about best procedure.

Exactly that, I'm addicted to those threads when something is seriously amiss in the civil aviation world.

The squabbling & elitism there is quite something, too.

That thread has had over 200,000 views in 10 hours, & the MH370 thread now totals just under 20 million views.

It seems we all like rubber necking & gawping at these things.

This got me on PPRuNe:

I witnessed one of our company pilots renew his IR with a DGCA inspector, by performing one visual approach...i kid you not. The level of oversight of the DGCA is unbelievable...you dont even require a me-ir to get a job on an airline in indo....

If that is even close to true it goes some way to showing how dangerous the push for profit is in what has become a very competitive, low margin industry (especially in Asia)

Horrible news. I heard earlier the they had 4 hours fuel on for a 2 hour flight which was obv plenty. Unfortunately they were discussing this 6 hours after it took off.

Demps to an ignorant simpleton like me, who lives in Asia and does a moderate amount of flying about, what airlines would you recommend I use and don't use?

I'm a huge nit with safety type things, always put my seatbelt on in the car etc etc so just wanted to know what airlines hold customer and staff safety in as high regard as they do profits.
