scrap metal values
«

Can any of you well informed chaps tell me what a hot water tank is worth as scrap?
Looking to have my boiler and tank replaced by a combi boiler v soon and want to have a bargaining chip when the guys quoting for the job tell me they will "get rid of the old tank for no extra charge" as they are doing me a favour.
Thanks in advance
Mick

Timing's not good. Selling prices of ferrous and non-ferrous are on the floor due to over-supply and are not expected to improve for a long time.

Wish someone would pass that info on to the ne'erdowells who keep nicking the electric cables round our way. More powers cuts lately than there were in the three day week.

Be happy if you can get the person to take it away for free

It's only worth weighing in if you take it with a load of other stuff or the trip won't cover your costs.
If they're lucky they might get enough for a couple of pints each out of it.
They're doing you a favour.

Pretty sure that you need a licence to cash in scrap nowadays.

We get adverts on the local radio for scrap metal. Joe Swash singing out "there's money in that metal" la la la.

Correct.
You need a separate license for each local authority, and for each person involved in the collection of scrap metal, so my Aunt May and her two sons, (who have been collecting scrap for over 50 years) need 36 separate licenses between them. These all have to be displayed on the van windscreen. (Which makes it impossible to actually see out)
Amazingly, the scrap metal thieves who these measures were ostensibly aimed at, don't seem to worry about the fact that they should have a license.

I'm assuming that this is only if you want actual cash. We weigh in our leftover cable and get paid direct in to the bank and we don't have a licence.

You can sell (paid by cheque) without a license but not buy / collect.
