"During his first spell at Goodison Park, he built an almost entirely new team which proved itself as one of the finest of the whole decade. He brought in younger players such as Peter Reid and Trevor Steven from smaller clubs to give them the opportunity to prove that they could compete at the highest level, and was largely successful. He also brought in "name" players such as Andy Gray, who was instrumental in a season and a half after joining them in late 1983, his goals transforming a struggling side into FA Cup winners and then league champions and European Cup Winners' Cup winners."
People tend to forget just how good some teams were pre Sky.Howard turned Everton into a very ,very good team.

I remember seeing this as a kid on the TV. Probably my first recollection of a disaster.
In 1966 144 people, 116 of them children, were killed in the small Welsh mining village of Aberfan when tons of slush, from a nearby coal slag tip weakened by rain, slid downhill and engulfed the village school, a farm and a row of terraced houses.

^^^^
I remember it as if it were yesterday, it's one of those "I know where I was at the time" moments. I was a Builders Merchant's Apprentice in Wembley, earning £5 per week at the time.
I am pretty sure Harold Wilson visited the scene the following day.
The responsibility was blamed upon the NCB under the Chairmanship of Lord Robens. He was a horrible little man, & his entire career was blighted by Aberfan. On the day of the disaster, instead of visiting the site, he chose instead to attend some University where he was being ordained as Chancellor.

My mistake Tom. The other thread is the correct home for this post.
