The shape of it is very like the kop at hillsborough before it was roofed and then seated.

It looks like it's the side of the pitch though that would rule it out.

The only correct guess so far is Newcastle

they are the away team, in this game from 1953

1953 is a crucial part of guessing this, for the competition pictured (which is no longer played) is part of solving the puzzle

you are looking for the home team (white sleeves) and ground now

the ground is still used, but is of course much changed

Would it be a Scottish team Tighty , Anglo Scottish cup match (if there ever was such a thing)

Yes, 1953 is the key to getting this.

Remember going to an Anglo Scottish Cup game Forest vs Ayr United in 1970's so definitely no Anglo Scottish Cup Smiley

I assume this guy has the original photo.

The old East Terrace in its pomp.

This was one of the annual pre-season Edinburgh Charities Day fundraising matches played between an Edinburgh select and a top English side every year between 1944 and 1962, alternately at Easter Road and Tynecastle. By 1963 the fixture must have run out of steam as no English side could be lured north and Dunfermline Athletic made a half-hearted trip across the Forth to be walloped 7-0 at Tynecastle.

Initially when I came across this photo (can't remember where I got it from now) it was labelled as Edinburgh v Newcastle, 1 August 1959 but I now think this is wrong and it is actually the match played in 1955. By 1959 both teams had adopted the fashion for collarless v-necked strips. The button-up collars worn here were only worn up until 57 in Hibs' case and 58 in Newcastle's.

According to the 1955 match programme the lineups were:
Edinburgh
Marshall (Hearts ) Grant, McLelland, Preston, Plenderleith (all Hibs ) Cumming ( Hearts ) Scott ( Hibs ) Murray, Bauld (Captain )Wardhaugh ( all Hearts ) & Ormond (Hibs )

Newcastle
Harvey, Keith & Mc Michael , Scoular Stokoe & Mitchell, Taylor , Eastham , White Allchurch & McGuigan.

The ground is correct, the match is not the Coronation Cup
