The eye-catcher in that is the astonishing power & growth of self-seeding trees.

First ground that came to mind was Maine Road, probably way off the mark!

It just makes me realise how pitches have improved out of all recognition.

Does anyone recall what pitches used to be like? The penalty area was mostly mud, and there'd be a furrow along the touchline where the linesmen used to run up & down.

It was pretty rare to see much grass on a pitch after December.

Now, even in mid-winter, the pitches are perfect, no mud, strong grass growth, almost like a crown green bowling surface.

not wanting to be too dull, but grass technology has come on a lot. many of the pitches have artifciial components alongside the grass

stadium surface business is huge, and extremely competitive

Ahhh , muddy pitches.

Rivers of piss flowing down the conrete terracing,

Those lovely spitting contests through the fence,

The open roofed toilets,

The surge down the terrace ,

Blokes pushing tea urns filled with hot chocolate or Bovril round the pitch,

Half time scores manually marked on a scorecard,

Arriving an hour before the game and having to queue,

Players numbered one to eleven,

Hard tackles ,

Retaliation not simulation,

Twisting and turning to free your arms to clap,

Non stop singing of so many different songs ensuring hoarseness for a couple of days,

Denim ,Air Wair and scarves tied to wrists,

And the little blue disabled cars.

It was certainly different and somehow a little more real.

Players numbered one to eleven

I miss that so much.

We knew what a player was by his shirt number.

I miss one sub on the bench.  You either use him or not.  No options.

I miss "no subs". Proper men in them days.

It's funny watching my 16yo son's reaction when he sees snippets of old games on TV. Between the pitches, pass backs to the keeper and the tackling he's not entirely convinced he's watching the same game.
