1994

John Smith died, aged 55.

Many think he was the last really credible Labour leader.

Please do, Adam, I seem to be flogging a dead horse here, only a handful of others have posted stuff. Guess we all like different stuff, but personally, I love this thread.

Perhaps you could do a Lancashire version? Or record every Burnley win?

I knew that story well, one of my first passions was motor racing in the fifties & sixties. I even had little Corgi replicas, which we'd push along the pavement......times have changed a bit.

By an uncanny coincidence, today is the 65th anniversary of the first ever "official" F1 GP at Silverstone, when no less than 200,000 flocked to the circuit.

The race was dominated by Italian cars & drivers, Alfa Romeo & Maserati, the great Fangio & Farina. I used to idolise those guys.

F1 racing cars in those days HAD to be in the colours of their country - Brits were green, Italians Red, French were blue, & so on. Only Ferrari carry on that tradition, every F1 Ferrari racing car has been red as far as I know.

Continuing with the theme of coincidences, at the very time when KP is making all the Test Cricket headlines......

1977

Tony Greig was summarily sacked after it emerged he was in league with Kerry Packer, who was setting up a rival Test Series for Channel Nine in Australia.

This was a monumental moment in cricket, & was to change everything, in so many ways.

Greig was reviled for being a traitor, & was almost hounded out of the UK.

He cut a deal with Packer though, made himself a very rich man indeed, & in later years, became, in many ways, quite a hero & well-liked bloke.

Oh my, how we despised Packer & Greig at the time, though.

This is a great, great story, I hope you take a moment to read it.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Series_Cricket

Until that time, cricketers were paid a pittance, but Packer changed all that, & Mr Pietersen & Co would do well to remember the debt they owe to Kerry Packer & Tony Greig.

The Court Case alone lasted 7 weeks.

Definitely not flogging a dead horse Tony, I love this thread. Brings back lots of memories and lots of stuff I didn't know about. Unfortunately some of the stories I remember make me realise I'm getting old lol.
