Imogen Cunningham died today in 1976. One of the greats of 20th century photography.

I'm a photography fan as you know Mr T, and I'm the last person to speak ill of the dead, but try as I might, I can't see anything remarkable about Imogen's work.

That's ok, I'm not her greatest fan either. Her botanical prints are not my thing. But I do admire her street photographs & portraits from the 40s & her lifetime passion for photography. She was working well into her 90s.

I guess her status was made as a pioneer in photography at the turn of the 20th century, her style, technique & experimentation was considered well advanced for the time. Probably you would need to see her original prints from the period & compare to her contemporaries to appreciate her talent.

When you put it like that I have to agree.

No on would be impressed today if two brothers built a plane and it flew a few hundred yards.

Alfred Noyes, poet.

The lines:

And the highwayman came riding—
         Riding—riding—
The highwayman came riding, up to the old inn-door.

may be familiar. Certainly a memory from my english class at school in the 70s.

1976: Israelis rescue Entebbe hostages
Israeli commandos have rescued 100 hostages, mostly Israelis or Jews, held by pro-Palestinian hijackers at Entebbe airport in Uganda.
At about 0100 local time (2200GMT), Ugandan soldiers and the hijackers were taken completely by surprise when three Hercules transport planes landed after a 2,500-mile trip from Israel.

About 200 elite troops ran out and stormed the airport building.

During a 35-minute battle, 20 Ugandan soldiers and all seven hijackers died along with three hostages.

this time in 1976 Britain was sweltering under a heat wave. The hottest day being 3rd July when the temp reached 35.9. Some pictures from the time.

I know exactly what I was doing on that day. I wonder if anyone else does? (Know what they were doing I mean, not what I was doing)
