1985

Japan Airlines flight JAL123 crashed with the loss of 520 lives, the deadliest single aircraft crash in history. The cause was effectively attributed to an incorrect repair 7 years earlier.

Amazing the shit people in the former DDR would buy, or what the technocrats thought they would:

The big bold German at the bottom says 'Nobody has the intention of erecting a wall here.

Sure. Definitely not these wall builders.

The longer text, which is a quote from a Press conference answering a direct question (indirectly, ofc) say:

'I understand you question thus: that there are people in West Germany who would want for us to mobilise all of the builders of the DDR's capital city in order to build up a wall. I am not aware, that such an intention exists. Our builders are mainly occupied with building homes and the workforce is fully engaged for that purpose'.

What he's saying between the lines there btw (which I'm not sure is strong enough in my translation!) is 'listen pal, this is our fucking Capital and we just tolerate you, wanker.

1969

The British Government has sent troops into Northern Ireland in what it says is a "limited operation" to restore law and order.

I may be incorrect, but I think the young lady with the patterned dress is Bernadette Devlin, who became an MP earlier that year, this photo was during the "Battle of Bogside".

1979

The Fastnet Yacht Race was hit by a freak gale force 11 storm, & 15 competitors & 3 rescuers died as a result.

I can't recall a single renewal of any other sporting event in which 15 competitors died. 77 of the yachts "turned turtle".

The then Princess Elizabeth gave birth to a daughter on this day, who went on to become my favourite Royal.

Which gives me the opportunity to wish HRH Princess Anne a happy 65th Birthday. I have nothing but admiration for this lady (& her stunning Daughter), and to be truthful, I have a bit of a thing for her. Cool, posh, intelligent, does not take herself too seriously, dresses beautifully, almost the perfect woman.

1971

Controversial show-jumper Harvey Smith was stripped of his title, & winnings, after he gave a V sign at the British Show Jumping Championships down at Hickstead. It caused a mighty hoohah in the media, things were different then. A V-sign, disgraceful.

It was a storm in a teacup really.....

Smith is said to have had heated words with one judge, Douglas Bunn, on the morning of the competition at Hickstead in West Sussex in southern England.

He arrived without the winner's trophy which he took home after his victory last year.

The rider said he had 'forgotten' it but critics claimed it was because he arrogantly assumed he would be taking it home again.

The trophy arrived from his home in Yorkshire, northern England, just in time for it to be presented to him once more.

He was a great bloke, proper Yorkshireman, blunt, rude, did not care who disliked him. He later went on to be a wrestler, and if I am not mistaken, his wife trained the Grand National winner a year or two back. Some life he has had.

Great character.

1998

One of those days we all remember, the atrocity of the Omagh bombing.

29 died, the highest incidence on a single day during The Troubles.

It was carried out by "The Real IRA" (not to be confused with The IRA),  who, as was the normal practice, gave advance warning of the bomb, but some confusion as to the location arose & the wrong area was evacuated. And so 29 died.

This is the aftermath.

A google image search of "Omagh bombing, graphic" yields some horrific scenes, & most of the casualties were civilians going about their daily lives.

I adored Fred.

Do you remember when he used to commentate on TMS, Tighty? He'd have a few too many pints at lunchtime, & then off he'd go, ranty ranty rant.  Sir Geoffrey was bland compared to Fred.

Harold Wilson described him as "The greatest living Yorkshireman".

I seem to remember that as a fast bowler, he bowled very long spells, none of this "4 overs & have a rest" nonsense for Fred.

Typically rude & blunt, of course, like most from those parts, but all the better for it.
