Same here though, I see something on here & then spend half an hour faffing about on Wiki & google.

In terms of "life education", is there anything better than Wiki & google? I know not all of us have access to computers & wifi, & reading is a struggle for some, but for most of us, there is no excuse not to learn more about life, & people.

Marc Bolan would have been a goner before you were born, but T-Rex were monster big at the time, I think John Peel helped popularise their stuff. We used to think T-Rex stuff was heavy metal. Truly.

I bet Tighty was a Marc Bolan fan, he liked a bit of glam rock. Booder & Karabiner, too.

I was 10 when marc bolan died

i remember the day because i used to have to walk past the tree he crashed into and died every day on the way to school

it was 200 yards from where i lived

16th september 77, i went to walk to school but the road was blocked off, and i had to detour round barnes common to get to school rather than go over the railway bridge on the road where he careered off and hit the tree

iirc his girlfriend was driving a mini and went to fast over the bridge and the car flew over the barrier

to this day 38 years later the tree is adorned with memorabilia

I was 15 when Bolan died so had listened to a lot of his stuff as it was always on radio and TOTP.
He had a unique voice and was popular with both guys and girls, i used to enjoy listening to him.

His girlfriend , and driver at the accident , was Gloria Jones ,a singer who had quite a successful career,perhaps best known for Tainted Love

A lady name Jeanine Deckers was born.

She went on to became "The Singing Nun",  & had a worldwide hit record with "Dominique". (Dominique, a-nique a-nique, tra la la, lala de da).

Sadly, life went all wrong after that, & she was to commit suicide in 1985.

The expelled Ugandan Asians began arriving in the UK.

There was much chuntering that it would all end badly for us & them in the UK, but it was quite the opposite, & they settled down quickly, worked hard, & it worked out well.

One thing to remember was that in 1972, shops in the UK were strictly 9-5, Monday to Saturday, closed on Sunday, & half day closing midweek.

They changed all that, they opened street corner convenience stores that were open 6am to midnight, 7 days a week, & the habits of the so-called nation of shopkeepers was changed forever.  It's unthinkable these days that all shops are not available to us almost 24/7.

The Public Inquiry into the Southall & Ladbroke Grove rail disasters opened.

Both accidents were on the GWR, within a few miles of each other, & both caused by a combination of SPAD's & the AWS which was turned off. 

AWS = Automatic Warning System, which alerts drivers to signals at danger & applies the brakes automatically.

SPAD = Signal Passed At Danger

Really scary, my little brother went out got steaming last night and threw up in his sleep unconscious in bed, my Dad came into work this morning and said that we nearly had another Jimi Hendrix on our hands, to find out this was 45 years ago today is really quite creepy.

I was watching vid on YouTube a while back where Michael Parkinson is interviewing Marc Bolan. He asks him if he still thinks that he will still be making hit records in 10 years’ time. “I won’t live that long” came the swift reply.

A terrible rail crash at Colwich Junction, near Stafford. Miraculously, only one person - the driver of one of the two trains - was killed. The driver & second man in the other train jumped clear just before impact. The driver who jumped clear had been issued with written brief of changed signalling protocol, but admitted he signed it without reading it.

1967

The Cunard Cruise Liner Queen Elizabeth 2 was launched on Clydebank - there was a thriving Shipyard industry up there at the time.

She remained in service until 2008, when she was purchased with a view to conversion into a Hotel in Dubai. Financial problems intervened, & she remains laid up in Dubai, rotting away.
