I am moving to Manchester with work and know next to nothing about the place. I have 2-3 weeks to sort accommodation and such like. Kmac has finally driven me out of Scotland Smiley

Questions:

What areas are recommended to live? Looking for central and have a decent budget rent wise
What is poker like? Tournaments and cash. Where should I be playing?
Things to do and avoid doing would also be good?

Any local experts?

I think Didsbury has been voted one of the top places to live in the UK, both Wilmslow and Alderley Edge are nice too. Both Wilmslow and Alderley Edge have the highest concentration of millionaires in the UK, but the rent isn't extortionate really for a big city. All the ballers live in Hale Barns, and I don't expect you can rent anything habitable for less than £1500 a month there.

As for casinos, they all have poker rooms I believe, but outside of GUKPT/GPS sort of festivals it's pretty bland. Your standard £20-£50 comps daily and cash up to £2-£2 for the most part. 235 is the casino people want to visit in the most according to friends who live in Manchester.

I lived there for 10 years some time ago.  I really liked the place.

I'd definitely avoid places like Salford and Levenshulme.  A lot of the places near the centre but not in the centre were pretty horrid.  They are definitely on the rough side.  I moved further out as soon as I could.  Prestwich was nice and fairly central.  Sale is good too.  Didsbury used to be reasonable, but don't think it is now.  There are some quite nice areas near Stockport too.  Cheadle was nice but a bit poncey.  Wilmslow super nice but definitely poncey, though there are cheaper bits on the town side of it.  If they are all too much, Burnage was certainly better than Levenshulme.

What is the budget and how close to town.  How urban do you want?

GUKPT Manchester seemed very soft to me, but only played it once.

Thanks guys.

The aim is very urban. We live in a village with fuck all and like the idea of being bang central. The northern quarter seems ideal. With areas such as Ancoats/Islington/Green Quarter cheaper alternatives. We ruled out Salford due to what we heard. Although apparently the quays is a bit better. The current thinking is close to Northern Quarter I.e. 5-10 min walk should be OK but listening to opinion.

We can spend about £1k a month and ideally want 2 bedrooms. We don't want furnished as we have cats so A would not be accepted or B they would scratch our deposit away!

When I buy I would look at the suburbs but just now it's all about access

I think I would live in Salford Quays if i moved to mancheter. Really like the area now easy enough into town on the tram.

Bury new road or 235 for poker.

Give me a shout when your around and ill come for some poker/food.

P.S I live about 20 minutes away from Manchester but have never lived in the city or closer.

I lived in Northern Q for five years. Should be plenty available under £1k. Try Vantage Quay and Market Buildings for example. Plenty of apartments to choose from Dale Street, Thomas Street, Hilton Street area. Would not recommend living in Ancoats (on the other side of the ring road).

If you need parking that will limit your choice, some places have underground parking but a lot don't.

Agree with above - Northern Quarter is spot on but keep well clear of Ancoats/Islington.

Loads of places going into Salford over the river around Blackfriars St. which I would have thought are good - not the bad part of Salford.

I visit family at a place called Great Northern Tower (loads of appartments) on Watson St in the heart of Manchester  - a brilliant location. Only a minute away from 235 Casino as well Smiley

Although you say you want very urban, Didsbury is a great location and will probably feel urban compared to where you are and easy transport links (Metro/bus) to City Centre. West Didsbury really good nowadays as well.

Lived in Rusholme, Longsight and Levenshume as a student, great times, but would not recommend once grown up.

Didsbury has a casino of course. Really nice although no idea what it's like for poker.

Salford and Moss Side might not be every ones cup of tea - but the people are really friendly i lived in salford years ago and on the first day going back to the house i walked into the house next door by mistake - the family that lived there laughed and i ended up staying for dinner and then they took me down the local pub and introduced me to all the locals - never had any trouble and never locked the front door.

Thanks guys. Went down on Monday and have found a promising looking place in the Northern Quarter. Salford Quays and Vantage quays both looked great but no suitable places at present.

Now to pack everything! Moving end of June.

Will shout you for that poker trip B2B.
