One thing that isn't getting much attention is the position the EU have to be seen to take.

Politically they need to look very tough with the UK. Negotiations cant be seen to be going too well - they don't want any momentum to gather in any other member country that could de-rail the EU project.

It seems logical they will do a deal - but will make the UK sweat and play hard ball right up until the wire.

I think you are missing one major consideration.  A leaving agreement only needs a majority of the 27 to agree, but a trade deal has to be unanimous.  For this reason the UK's attempt to coalesce the two can never work.

I guess the real power in the EU will flex its muscle. Merkel will want some sort of trade deal and will lean on the weaker members.

She is pragmatic enough to know its in her own countries trading interest to do a deal.

Oh stop being so positive ffs

Such complacency from Chris Grayling on Marr. "Britain will succeed come what may", with no supporting argument, flying in the face of all the evidence unfolding all around us.

With no deal, "we'll grow more here". Yep, because it would too expensive to import the food and other goods that we do now. He seems not to care (or not to see?) that we would slip from being one of the richer countries in Europe to at least mid-tier, if not worse. Our money is already worth a lot less than before the vote - it'll be worth even less if this numbskull's views hold sway.

That's a great article.  I particularly enjoyed the paragraph on Cameron at the end.

Grayling is bonkers

"The negotiations are “where I would have expected them to be” at this stage, Grayling said on the BBC. “Nobody ever thought we were going to have negotiations that would last half an hour.”

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2017-10-15/u-k-lawmakers-can-stop-no-deal-brexit-labour-s-mcdonnell-says

If it is possible to retract article 50, it must be odds on that it happens.

So we learn today that London house prices have fallen again this month, down by an average of £5,000 since July, and that inflation is now up to 3.0% or 3.9%, depending on which index you use.

Well done Brexit voters.

Well done Brexit voters.

Brexit has had a massive impact but it's not the only driving factor for inflation.

Brexit could have been a great opportunity it's just such a shame that it's been left to a farcical government incapable of providing "strong and stable leadership" to handle it.  Car crash tories.  Will be fun when it does go tits up completely no longer will we here the cries from the right about how the left crashed the economy.
