Person A and Person B (will they ever not argue?) both require a taxi home from the same location.

Person A would usually spend £12 on their taxi and it would usually cost £20 for Person B.

Happily Person A lives half way up the route for Person B so they decide to share a taxi. (Person A would usually pay slightly more than half of what Person B does due to base fare)

The taxi comes to a total of £20. How much should each person pay?

I'm with Tom.  The shared journey is the first part.  The 2nd part belongs entirely to B.  If I was A, I'd probably throw B a tenner and expect him to pay the tip.

If this would me I'd expect it to be a tenner each if you are mates.

But if you are tight wads:

Seperate journies = 32
Combined journey = 20
Saving = £12
Split in ratio of what the normally pay.
Punter A saving = 12/32 * 12 = 4.5
Punter B saving = 20/32 * 12 = 7.5
Punter A pays 12-4.5 = £7.50
Punter B pays 20-7.5 = £12.50

This isn't strictly fair imo.  Punter A would be freeriding on B's need to make the longer journey.  It is not possible for A to make savings if B is not making the longer journey in the first place.

Im normally person B in this spot and ALWAYS got short changed by people A.  Dont think it really needs to be calculated to the penny if you're friends.  Id say around £8/£12 split is fair with both making a similar proportional saving by sharing

It's always a case of person A just stuffs whatever non-£10 note + coins they have into person Bs hands, wishes them a good night, tells them the to give them a call next week, staggers out of the taxi and throws up their kebab on their neighbors front yard. Then proceeds to try and quietly let themselves in the house, without making a noise yet making a shushing noise to themselves and giggling.

I'm person A btw.

My wife would empty the contents of her purse and make sure we are horrifically worse off as a standard.

Me with mate, it all works out in the end. Anything between £0 and £20 depending on who has change and who is under it.
