The photographs of the incident on DailyMailOnline are beyond extraordinary.

James. Do you think he made an attempt, however futile, to land on the road?

Would he have had any chance of avoiding the road if he tried to? A few feet to either side would have made a huge difference.

Hi Tom,

I know you asked James, who likely knows a zillion times more about flying than I ever will, but an emphatic "no" from me.

He was out of control, & simply trying not to crash. It was (imo) just bad luck that he happened to be over the road when he came out of the (failed) loop.

I doubt, in the nana seconds it all happened (he was supposedly doling around 400mph) he had any chance to weigh up where it might crash.

If you have half an hour to spare, the PPRuNe thread, which has already had over a quarter of a million views in 48 hours, is here.....

I fear I may be accused of being ghoulish, but I'm utterly fixated by this dreadful accident, & have read every single news item on it, on the web, & in newspapers, & TV News.

The (11?) deaths are utterly tragic - most of them were just going about their daily life, & in an instant, they were obliterated.

It is an astonishing story, in so many ways.

As it was at an Airshow, we are fortunate (?) that there were thousands of aircraft & photography geeks present, so the quality of photographs of the last moments were unlike anything I've ever seen before.

Part of my interest is that Gill & I are very familiar with Shoreham Airport, & we had a joy ride from there to the Isle of Wight & back in a little Cessna last year, which scared us both out of our lives.

The whole thing is beyond dreadful, but I can't stop myself eagerly seeking out every piece of news about it I can.

RIP to all those who died.

I'm fascinated by it too, as I am by most tragedies, especially murders, accidents, addictions, and dare I say it, physical trauma and illness when the sufferer can write about it.

Is it ghoulish, I don't know. It just seems like all the things they use in movies bur its real life.

Have you discovered what went wrong yet, or heard any good theories?

I have read lots of theories, informed & otherwise, as to what went wrong, but I've really no idea.

The pilot was extremely experienced. A SOTBO, but pilot error or a mechanical malfunction, but which it was I have no idea at present. The accident was almost inevitable from late in the loop. The minimum "display height" at these Airshows is 500 feet I believe, so he was a very long way (relatively) off his planned trajectory, so whatever went wrong happened during the loop.

My own memories of Shoreham Airport, & that beautiful Lancing College, the 2nd photo was taken from the Cessna as we came in to land. So all those photos really resonate for us.

I haven't read any of that thread but no way he was trying to land on the road. It is very busy at the best of times and cars are always stacked at those traffic lights. The end of the runway at Shoreham is not far from the road, though looking at the videos taken, he appears to fly along the road.

I was due to be around that area at the time of the accident, as we were driving back from a holiday in Devon. Due to the heavy/slow traffic out of Devon, we ended up stopping off in the New forest so missed it

Wow, God bless the New Forest.

That stretch of the A27, between Brighton & Arundel, is always chock-a-block.

This graphic, from the BBC news item, perfectly shows the relationship between the A27, & the Airport.

That's the coast, top of picture, & the river meandering to the east of the airport is the Adur.

Andy Hill, the pilot, appears to have recovered, & has been out of hospital three weeks now, this picture was taken on Wednesday.

He has yet to be interviewed by Police, which seems a little odd.

Doesn't look in a fit state to do anything to be frank.

My suspicion is he would probably rather have died in the crash.

Terrible burden he'll have to carry for the rest of his life. Feel sorry for the bloke.

Hard to say from a photo as to whether he is in a fit state, but I most certainly agree with the other sentiments.
