Even better, I found a history of of Rodi's Cafe, which is wonderful, as I spent so much time in their, dated one of the daughters for a while too.

So I read this little tale & it filled me with joy. Until I got to the bit that said.......

That's an astounding piece in so many ways, not least that you should stumble across it like you did.

My Rodi's was called Josie's. It specialised in simple, filling meals for men who got dirty at work. If a stranger looked inside he would quickly walk away. The walls and floor were covered in oil and grease, but the kitchen was spotless.

My regular meal was roast beef with stew poured over it, two buttered doorsteps, a pint of tea and treacle sponge with custard.

Oh for the days when I could work that lot off in an afternoon and arrive home asking what's for tea.

If I'm being sensible I'll have a protein shake with oats, and if not, I'll have toast & peanut butter.

No kitchen in our house at the moment, so no Sunday fry-ups here Sad

Where has your kitchen gone?

Have you though of getting one of these?

My brother knocked it down last month, and it is currently being rebuilt/extended.

We've a plethora of good restaurants in town, so not taken to cooking outside yet.

It's not that big a problem. Well, it's becoming a bigger problem, but that's more about me, than it is about the lack of kitchen Smiley

Banana, strawberries, spinach, grapes, carrots, broccoli, cashew nuts & a scoop of protein powder. Add water and smashed up in a blender to drink on the way to the gym.

Choice of veg/fruit may vary slightly but the spinach, grapes, banana and protein are ever present.

I've been threatening to try this for ages.

What does it taste like on a one to ten yummy scale and how many cals are in it?

You need plenty of fruit to overpower the earthy flavours of the veg. Scoop of chocolate protein eliminates all trace and makes it taste really quite nice. Get rid of the veg altogether and some of them rate in the 7 to 9 region. You can obviously vary the fruits to get something you really like.

Not sure about the exact calories but I'd guess in the region of 600. I need it to be reasonably high because it's a pre-training breakfast but you could cut this drastically by removing the nuts and protein powder. Probably be down to 250 or so if it was just fruit/veg but surprisingly filling. Kept me going for 4 hours when I was trimming down.

I haven't eaten breakfast properly for a good few years now. Mainly due to working nights so the first thing I eat after I get up is usually a full size dinner at 5pm.

Though back when I was 18-19 I would be out for breakfast almost every morning at the same place. A truck stop in the middle of the A30 in Cornwall called Smokey Joe's. It started as a stop for truckers, and turned into a haunt for people trying to eat their way out of a hangover at 8am.

It was standard to leave the local nightclub at 3am and see the same people you were getting plastered with in Smokey Joe's a few hours later still half cut wearing the same clothes. They did a lot of business selling cans of lager under the table for £1.50 because of it, even though I am sure they weren't licensed. The place smelt of stale beer, fags, bacon and shame.

Standard order was the Hungryman's. £5 including a mug of tea the size of a small bucket. If you felt particularly rough you could have a shower for a extra couple of quid.

I haven't been there in a couple of years now, but I'm sure it's got a new generation of pissed teenagers queuing up outside at 8am for breakfast. I don't think I could stomach a full breakfast there now, but back when I was a teenager I would rather have food there than anywhere else. Had a Christmas dinner there one year, and it's still in the top 5 meals I've ever eaten.

The place will be open forever. If you're ever in the middle of Cornwall and want a massive breakfast cooked by a 15 year old kid working his first Saturday job, go to Smokey Joe's.
