Think I'd plump for someone like Simon Deadman or Posh Alex. The most important thing is not their relative poker ability, but their ability to communicate well. Both do so very well indeed, & we'd bond well. Hellmuth is The Bizz at the table, we know that, but I fancy he'd be a fearfully bad coach, Mentor or teacher.

The very last hand of the night goes to Dewi James, who finds ACES and talks Raymond O’Mahoney into calling his all-in preflop bet of 15k.  “If I had AQ, I’d call!” says Dewi.  Raymond calls holding pocket 66’s.

Always keen to maximise your drinking time?

Think Simon Deadman would be a good call, as would Pleno.  I am not sure that you should be looking to change your game completely just improve on what is there.

Exactly that, very important indeed. We can't change what we are, we can only do what we do better.

Agree.

The best coaches need not be the best players and vice versa.

Someone who understands theory and can communicate that well will be worth so much more than someone who intuitively undrstands poker to a higher level but cannot distil or break that down for mere mortals.

Much in the same way as the best golf /  tennis coaches wont necessarily be elite players.

The skill set needed is different.

Problem is the players do need to be really really good. Playing for 10m dollars if a guy who is "good at putting his point across" doesn't actualyk know what he's talking about then it's going to cost you hundreds of thousands if not millions. Probably best thing is to hire 8 guys who are all good/solid and do many many many simulations and speak about every hand and possibility

I hesitate to debate anything poker related with BITB, but
Thing is, these nine guys have already outlasted over 6,000 others, and will have been on table with at least four of the others for quite a while.
These eight good solid guys may well know lots, and have answers to lots of situations but will they have the table knowledge that has been accumulated over days five, six and seven?

Even if we're saying that this is all going to be about ICM doesn't that still depend on assigning accurate ranges.

Or am I being naive?

The thing is, I'm already pretty damn good - I just made the November Nine, so I must have some idea.

And I might be Lucky Joe the woodcutter, yeah, but it's like swotting the night before an exam - it's a bit late then.

The greatest player in the world could not teach me a thing if his teaching style (let's say shoutyy-wouty) did not suit my learning style.

I think it depends on your skill level and your ability to absorb info.  If you are a semi decent player then it would be worth it.  If you are a log chopper from North Dakota then you are probably best just going in as you were as training is likely to over confuse you.

This.

If you play at a high level, like Jacobsen already did, then high level training is in order.

For Dennis Phillips, Jerry Yang, Jamie Gold etc etc it would probably be counter productive. Just let them carry on doing their thing. Maybe a little work on composure, body language, tells etc

Would the players who have backers generally need to ask permission before choosing a coach?

"Well done, Tal. November Nine. Chip leader. Fantastic. 50% of 10 million? I could send the boy to Eton for a proper education and all the privileges in life that come from it."

"Thanks, Keith. Before I left Vegas, I sorted a coach out for the next three months."

"Brilliant. Great idea. Who is it?"

"Hang on. I've got a photo of me and him here on my 'phone"

"As long as it's not Negreanu, ha ha!"

"......."

"It's Negreanu, isn't it?"

"Errrrr"

"Isn't it?"

"It might be."

"You'll do that out of your own money, Tal."

"Understood, sir. Sorry."

Damn right that's coming out of your half... otherwise the coach will start needing massages soon too.
