With the International Break - what a nuisance they are - it was a quiet week for football, so The Times did a little "the season so far" piece which was really quite interesting. 8 of their Journos commented on a range of topics.

A few of their comments follow. Most would have been hard to predict before the season began.

Player of the season so far?

7 out of 8 went for James Vardy (ex Stocksbridge Park Steels & Fleetwood Town) , the other went for Pelle.

Team of the season so far

7 went for Leicester City, the other (same lady - Alyson Rudd -  who went for Pelle) goes for Crystal Palace, managed by ex Newcastle Manager Pardew "away form astonishing, pace blistering, defence solid".

thats interesting. Palace have three away losses

would have highlighted west ham for away form, where they won and how they won with passing football/possession

Premier League Top Four

6 go for Arsenal, Man C, Man U & Spurs.

1 replaces Spurs with Southampton, the other, strangely, replaces Spurs with Chelsea.

When it comes to Pardew the facts have nothing to do with it.

Just know that his teams play front foot attacking football and any club would be lucky to have him.

Fans you admire most?

Wide diversity here, but the most votes - 3 from 8 - go to Palace fans.

Best TV Pundit

1 for Shearer, 1 for Danny Murphy, one for Ian Wright, but this man gets the clear nod. Quite right too, few of us can fail to have learned by listening to him. When he got the gig, he was poo-poo'd. They are not poo pooing now.

He just needs to get himself some decent ties now. Jeez, did you ever see a man wear more boring ties?

How could anyone vote for Danny Murphy or Ian Wright!?

Their reasoning was....

Danny Murphy - "honest, insightful, & ever so slightly menacing".

Ian Wright - "...has been reborn, he is fun, yet cares. Critical without being spiteful"

Nice to see the media recognising Palace for the right reasons, which is more than can be said for Roy Hodgson.

I consider myself to be a fair judge of Palace players (actually couldn't believe that someone said Jason Puncheon should be in the England squad - he is so over-rated it is ridiculous).
However.....Jesse Lingard has 2 decent performance and finds himself elevated to the England squad in front of Zaha.
And Scott Dann has probably been in the top 3 most consistent centre backs in the last 18 months yet still finds himself nowhere near the squad - if he played for Spurs he would be in it!!

For Hodgson someone has to do something astonishing to get picked from a smaller club (eg Vardy).  As soon as Chambers joined Arsenal he was immediately in the England squad.  The fact Dann doesn't get a look in says far more about Hodgson's limited thinking that the player.  How Lingaard can even be on the radar is beyond me.
