BBC2 last night at 11.15 was "sound and vision" the story of bowie's five albums from 71- to 80 and how the songs were made, his various images developed etc
fascinating documentary
I watched that, too, but I thought the Channel 4 version at 10.35 was much the better.
it is here

love this, had past me by until yesterday

favourite cover, released after Cobain's death.

Bugger, I'm working, so will have to use Sky Planner, which is already 96% full.
What a decision, tape Bowie but have to delete "The Golden Age of Coaches" "The Rise & Fall of Penn St Station" & "How Brooklyn Bridge was built".

He was business savy.
He anticipated the effect digital formats would have on thd music industry, and not just by famously releasing an album for download in thr mid 90s. He also was one of the first artists to list himself publically, and sold shares of his future record sale royalties. He even described it as taking advantage of his last oppoutunities to cash in on the declining industry.

the world really was a better place for having bowie in it.
uncompromising and popular, not an easy marriage.
he was never a tourist either. when he dabbled with drum and bass it wasnt because he was trying to appeal to yoof or appear relevant, it was because he was properly into the scene. he was attending the seminal metalheadz sessions in a pokey london club long before the music gained traction in popular culture. indeed even the promoters of the night were unaware that bowie was an atendee at the club until one of the dj's spotted him sat in the middle of the dance floor. [contrast that witj today's pop-idols who appropriated another wildly innovative london musical movement in having dubstep as a standard backing track, most without having any clue on the musics origins]
and what a vocal performer. for me he'll be epitomised by the following track:
phillip glass, bowie and aphex twin are radical in their fields. well glass rinsed bowies heroes album. he essentially covered bowies songs in his unique repetitious brooding manner.
aphex twin sourced the accapella version of bowies heros and laid it over glass' interpretation adding some distortion, but essentially letting the vocal stand. jesus what a vocal.
i'm sure bowie would have approved of the result.
that tracks holds some special memories i had the pleasure of DJing at magic mushroom parties back when they were legal. liverpool had a home delviery service and a pub in the city centre held magic mushroom sundays where they served hallucinogen soup, tea and the twisted fungus itself. they were a bit pf liverpool phenomenon for a while. i used to mix the bowie/glass/ahx track into bruce sprigsteens ghost of tom joad. bosssss.
I'm not so old that I don't appreciate a remix of the classics of my earlier years, but that is horrible.

horses and courses.
its not really a remix though.
i love the original and glass's version.
guess being a huge aphex head and some hazy memories means its inevitable i love the resulting mash up.
i guess the measure of the respect for the mans talent is the diverse range of people being mad into his music. from people sitting atop the classical music world to the founders of dope drum and bass nights or people like aphex who make strange electronic music.
some of the resulting work aint going to resonate with everyone.
here's a heartfelt tribute from the hip-hop scene which might miss the mark with some. i again thinks its BOSS:

Spotted on the Twitter feed of AlunB.
I've listened to more Bowie in the past two days than I have done in the past 20 years.
Think most of us can plead guilty to that one.

Surely not? Old music is so easy to access these days compared to when I was a kid. You can just load it up on youtube or spotify in seconds. Even if you spent 20 years making no attempt to do this, or dust off your old albums, surely you'd just hear them when out and about on the radio, in pubs or even shopping malls.
18 of the top 20 albums right now on Amazon are Bowie albums
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/bestsellers/music/
Quite a lot of them are showing as out of stock. If anybdy wants them on vinyl, sure I can do a deal.
