i think its Pele

RickBFA so guess Hillsborough

Brazil played all their games in the 66 world cup at goodison so its not that competition

so lets say it is his club side Santos and it would be sheffield wednesday in a testimonal

looks packed.35,000+ now in the early sixties sheff wed were getting 15k ish for league games so it has to be a special one off match

to my mind Pele looks quite young here so early 60s?

Tighty is on the right lines.

At Hillsborough in February 1972. It was Wednesday v Santos on a Wednesday afternoon at 2.30pm kick off due to strikes they could not guarantee power for floodlights for an evening kick off.

I think it was full, certainly over 45,000 there.

Love the photo.

I started watching Wednesday the year before so some familiar names on team sheet. My dad wouldn't let me miss school for the game. A few of my mates went.

Tough dad!  Imagine not letting your son miss school to see Pele!

Some of my boyhood hero's there - Carlos Alberto, Pele, Edu.

Rivelino, Jairzinho & Felix were in later years, I fancy.

Wonderful memories of watching the 1970 World Cup Final, in which Brazil demolished Italy.

The team sheet and game was defo from 1972.

Wednesday did play Santos in early 60's but those players and that photo were all from early 70's. Wednesday had that kit from around 69-72/3 I think.

EDIT - Tighty you had me doubting myself - that Wednesday kit was 65 til 72, so photo defo of 72 game

^^^^

Edu, who is shown at no 9 on the Team Sheet, was not born until 1949, so would only have been 13 in 1962.

I'm not dissing Tighty, like, but it's the 2nd time he has got a football stat wrong in the last 11 years. Disgraceful really, the man knows nothing.

I guessed this one but won't give it away.

Think it's fair to say it was a weird build. Can't remember the exact story but some one had money to burn.

Hoffenheim stadium? Village team to Champions League in 9 years IIRC, bankrolled by one of the co-founders of SAP (huge IT software firm).
