You can change one sporting result

any sport, team game or individual

which result do you change and why?

Great question.

3 June 1978 Scotland 1 Peru 3. I was only 8 but can remember the hype and the disappointment.

Five years of pain since. Worst day of my football life by far. Relegation saw a good team, including Dwight Gayle, broken up.

Celtic v Porto, UEFA Cup Final 2003

Was a great 5 days but might have been a bit better with a different result.

Arsenal v Barcelona, Champions League final, 2006.  Could have done without Jens being sent off.  Would happily change the result to being able to hang on to the 1-0 lead we had at half time.

I could have chosen lots but i think my most painful, to be at in person, was

Stoke 0 Leicester 0 that relegated us to League One

When i was a bit younger it was

Swindon 4 Leicester 3 play off final, came from 3-0 down to 3-3 and lost to a late penalty

If i went into NFL, rugby, cricket etc i would be here all day so those two will do for now!

Yahoo losing the Gold Cup to Desert Orchid.

Tom Morgan took it up way too soon after Ten Plus fell. really needed him giving us a lead into the straight.

Had life changing money on it even at  21, from all rates at 100-1 down.   Sigh......

A little disappointed this wasn't Tighty announcing his Cher tribute tour.

Snooker British Open. Assembly rooms Derby ~ 1986.

About 50 of us went to watch 17yo Stephen Hendry V our man Danny Fowler.

Final frame of a scintillating match, pink and black remaining.

Danny doubled the pink leaving a straight black 2ft along the cushion for the win. He chalked his cue and though for a while. This was unusual for him and I knew he was torn between punching it and rolling it in dead weight.

He decided to punch it, (He told me afterwards that he didn't trust the table enough to roll it) It rattled in the jaws and rolled to mid table just past the blue spot leaving the white about 6" off the black cushion.

Hendry was faced with a horrible choice, a difficult safety or a very difficult pot. He glanced up at his mam, (Who travelled everywhere with him at the time) got down and slotted it into the green pocked as sweet as a nut.

That right there was the pivotal moment in Danny's career imo. Snooker was booming and big sponsors were waiting. It truly crushed him. He played on for a year or two but never recovered.

I would definitely not want that one to change, my team being the immediate beneficiary of it.

This would be mine, the 2000 Play-off final, Barnsley vs Ipswich, which we lost 4-2.

This was our second and final season of Premier League parachute money and a return to the top flight within 2 seasons would have changed our subsequent history in a huge way, even if we'd have only stayed there for a season.  The immediate impact was that we sold Craig Hignett and began a campaign of recruiting mediocre players on the cheap, very few of whom were successful.

The bigger impact was that we were then caught up in the ITV Digital fiasco, and had gone into administration and been relegated into League One within 2 seasons of this game being played, and have yo-yoed between Championship and League One ever since.

Ironically, it's still one of my favourite football games to have attended though, despite the result.  Brilliant game, great atmosphere between supporters.  The only downside was that someone had to lose on the day.

Tom Watson not winning the 2009 Open , 3 putting the last and losing in a play off.

To win at the age of 59 would have been one of the all time sporting achievements.

Top man , very humble and genuine guy , was gutted for him.

Euro 96 semi-final. Gazza gets there.

Just edges the 1990 World Cup semi for me as I was 15 rather than 9, I think we have a better chance of winning that final and winning the tournament on home soil would’ve been epic and made a glorious summer even better.
