Remarkably (in my view) many in the print media are arguing against this tactic, suggesting the Police may or will cause injuries & as a result face compensation claims.

The Law is wrong if Police officers can't use "reasonable force" to stop this sort of thing.

What is staggering is the amount of these "moped crimes". In London, it's apparently down from 18,000 per year to 12,000 per year. That's one every half an hour, 24/7. Extraordinary.

Maybe says a lot about our society today that when I first saw this I thought it was some kind of reportage to show the brutality and heavy handedness of the police. Really was very surprised to see it was deliberate policy.

Not unhappy, just surprised

They should consider themselves fortunate that they are not in Brazil where the police may summarily execute criminals under the new regime.

In truth it does seem a little draconian to me.

Desperate times call for desperate measures though. I mean, how else can they combat this?

Let's not forget, it's also the moped criminals that are throwing acid at people.

I completely understand what you are saying, similarly the usual rules of law and civil liberties should not apply when dealing with terrorists.

I doubt it will last too long though - as soon as one of them gets seriously injured a whole load of questions will get asked.

The police continually get away with shooting innocent people in America. We can't even get away with knocking guilty people off a moped.

Trump would say that if we all walked around carrying assault-rifles the police wouldn't be needed.

I don't disagree with either of you. It is a little draconian but how else do the police bring them to a halt? The little scrotes are way too agile to box in.

Brilliant.

And when they fall off, rev it up and run them over again.

When they ram the moped it flies out of control

Soon as an innocent bystander or toddler gets a flying moped embedded in the face it will be gg

That drop in numbers coincides with a wider change of tact from a year ago https://www.standard.co.uk/news/crime/scotland-yard-unveil-new-tactics-in-crackdown-on-moped-gangs-including-new-scrambler-bikes-to-chase-a3672366.html

I found that article after remembering some forces took delivery of mid sized BMW scramblers, a vehicle more suited to giving chase.  Additional tactics were spiking the tyres, DNA spray tagging, and undercover ops in hot spots. Bumping doesn't sound like the preferred option but it is a handy deterrent.
