Today I was in my local PDSA. While there I came across an old book called ' Family Games and Fun Tricks'. I always pick these kinds of books up as I enjoy magic tricks, ect. It was split into a few different sections containing headings such as games of skill, puzzles and card tricks.

Like most people, I have fond memories of playing board games as a kid. Monopoly was one of the games covered in the book. When I was a kid I went to live with my Aunt, Uncle and their family. We would spend hours playing monopoly. I had an older cousin who had a massive ability at this game. Others in the book were RISK which I like almost as much as I do poker. I just wish there was a professional RISK tour. Chess also holds happy memories from my childhood. I once played in a chess tournament. My teacher at school used to be a high ranked player and asked if I wanted to replace another kid who was sick. The tournament was fairly large with around 100 players. All I remember from the tournament was being slaughtered by my opponent. Unfortunately I had never used co-ordinates before and couldn't focus on the actual game. Instead I was trying to work out how to write the moves down during my scheduled match to avoid being disqualified.

I have heard of all the games under the games of skill section, backgammon, chess, poker, RISK, ect.  But one game I have never heard of is Kaluki.
Is this another poker variant?

I know some of the young players from the US are former MAGIC THE GATHERING players. The now contoversial player ZeeJustin is one of these.  Do you think it is possible to transfer one set of skills gained in one game to another such as poker?

Kalooki, tournaments every Sunday at 9pm at Luton (not that that helps you!)

A discard game played with two decks....aim is to make runs and sets etc...so really a cross between gin rummy and poker

played with points scoring...if one player manages to disscard all his cards the remaining players have to add up the points score of their remaining cards...first one to 150 loses

generally played in casinos at a £x per point game

It is NOTHING like poker Mr End!!! tut tut. The game has several regional variations, but only slight differences tbh, most games will be 100 to stay in, 50 to come down. Always try to create a single 4 set, as you have to find parkers otherwise ( you can lay odd cards on other players hands once they have come down) Always remember to pick up before you act, and discard once finished. Usually you include 2 jokers in the 2 decks, and these are used as wild cards but be careful as they are 15 points a piece if you get stuck with them at the end. Some places do not have the jokers included when down to heads up, takes all the fun out of it I think when they do that!

The rest is easy peasy!  Cheesy Love the game and have been playing it for years!

I keep winning though, funny that!

It's like poker in terms of styles. Its very easy to read people in the game, and they dont seem to 'mix it up' like they do in poker, so if you play erratic its very easy to get people to chuck the cards you want.

Do you both play 'live' in a game similar to Tightends suggestion.

We just play headsup no Jokers, increases the skill element with no jokers. Thats why she always wants them in.

Come on hun who is ahead over the games we have played?

James has I believe only played for cash once (hehehe) So I guess he is allowed to be a little green still. When I first learnt to play (about 9 years ago) I got totally hooked on it, played everyday near enough but it doesn't compare at all to playing in a "real" tourney. I used to play at the casino as often as I could, and the standard usually is very high.  Unfortunately it's a game that is going to suffer at the hands of the poker boom.

It’s a great game to play with your mates, it really is funny to watch them make huge giveaways of what their hand is.

I am the self proclaimed Kalooki king! Had some good teachers... Latif and Theresa eastwood, both very good.

Peolple still like to play, had a few games with the welsh lads at festivals... I prefer to play without jokers as i think it requires more skill.

Flushy is no card player!

James, lets not forget that you were also for a while playing you own rules!!!      Yes, I will admit you are ahead between the 2 of us, but the no joker rule is debatable as to whether is brings more skill. Jokers are part of the game, like it or not.
