How do you define a professional poker player?

What is a professional poker player? Is it someone who earns there living from poker? Someone whi plays a set number of hours? What? It seems more and more people are calling themselves "professional" poker players there days. I have a full time job yet i make more money from poker than i do in my job. Am i a semi-professional poker player? lol

Anyone who derives the majority of their income from playing poker I suppose.
Although most "professional" poker players are anything but professional. The term is almost oxymoronic.

I'm a professional and, er, a poker player. I doubt the two will ever meet though.

It's interesting that if you define a pro poker player as being someone who solely derives an income from playing poker, ie no affiliate deals, no article writing, commentating or business on the side that kinda runs itself, there are very few people who would qualify.

But who would do that?
A doctor with a stock portfolio who rents out a room is still a doctor.

Didn't say anyone would or should do it, I said it was interesting. Was talking about it the other day to someone who writes articles and commentates and well, I thought it was interesting anyway.

I guess it's just another way that us poor old poker pros are often mis-understood.
.......sniff.

It IS interesting Byron.
"Poker Professional" covers a multitude of sins.
Jesse May is a Poker Professional in my opinion, but he rarely plays. Diitto Marty Wilson. Ditto, if your imagination is vivid enough, me.
But as to "pure" poker Pros, who earn their living at the table, not many.
On the UK Live Tournament scene, I can think of two guys who probably earn a decent living - Thewy & Lord Wernick. Many scratch a living, but barely.
In cash Games, well that's different. 50 or more earn a living "Live", & probably thousands do so Online.
Poker is big business now, so many folks DO earn a living from the game "off the table".

Tikay is a professional poker player imho and a gentleman - a great combination. The only problem with Tikay is he is too damm modest and deserves more recognition.
