One of poker’s most famous faces, Shahram ‘Shawn’ Sheikhan, has now become one of the most controversial after being arrested in his Las Vegas home on 30th August and withheld by authorities for seven days.
The arrest was made in relation to a misdemeanour Shiekhan committed back in 1995 in which he served 9 months incarceration and 5 years probation for ‘sexual battery and child molestation/annoyance’.
A US resident since 1983 with an American wife and 9 year-old child, Shiekhan is now being faced with threats of deportation that would see him being permanently ousted from the country where he made his name.
Formerly of Iranian descent, Sheikhan arrived in America at the age 9 before managing a successful chain of tobacco and tattoo stores. Sheikhan also made his mark on the live poker scene, rising to fame at the 2005 World Series of Poker after a bust-up with fellow hothead Mike Matusow which saw both players dealt 10 minute time penalties.
A regular on High Stakes Poker, ‘Sheiky’, as he is often referred, followed up his $600k win in 2005 with a 2nd and 3rd in the two following World Series for a total of $377k in 7-Card Stud and Lowball respectively.
38-year old Sheikhan paid a $10,000k bond for his release and is currently working frantically with his lawyers to prevent his deportation.
