Poker Moves Closer To Being A Sport

Is poker a sport, or is it just a recreational activity?

This question has been asked on countless occasions, but with asserted conclusions rarely drawn. Whilst some identify the stamina, skill, and competitiveness involved in the game, others shine the spotlight on the lack of physical exertion, and, perhaps more emphatically, the absence of an established governing body. Golf has the P.G.A, football has F.I.F.A, and even the often derogatorily denoted ‘pub game’ of darts has a recognised set of rules.

However, are times set to change? Perhaps so, as this week saw the official launch of the World Poker Association, aptly abbreviated to the W.P.A. Part of the organisation’s aims will be to improve the status of poker and elevate it to the heights of those sports which already have similar, and clearly successful, governing bodies.

To achieve these targets, the W.P.A invites all comers involved in the world of poker to join their ranks and become a part of tournament poker’s sole membership-based and non profit-making association. Already fighting the uphill battle is the Hendon Mob’s very own Joe Beevers, who is fully behind the cause.

So, will those hundreds of grey areas soon be translated into black or white, or will they forever remain muddied by the various rules, terms, and conditions that engulf the game? Only time will tell, but the formation of such an organisation, although still in its very early stages, surely must be a huge step in the right direction.

If you are interested in becoming a member of the W.P.A, then please visit the association’s site at www.wpapoker.com

Boy, tikay will be a happy bunny.
