There were many people who thought that poker would be a bubble that would burst. There were also people who said that the online faze would diminish. Then we had the people who predicted the end of poker due to the laws that came to pass in the United States in the latter stages of 2006. So far none of these predictions have been accurate and I don’t think that they ever will be.

Of course, the interest in poker will peak just like all things peak but to suggest that the interest in poker will go away sometime in the future is very wide of the mark. Once you begin to understand just what attracts people to poker in the first place then it is blatantly obvious that what we are looking at here is something that will be forever changing but will continue to be around for a very long time to come.

Firstly, we have the invention of the Internet and this is obviously something that isn’t going to disappear. Just like with any invention that benefits mankind, the Internet will be a tool that we will use for a very long time to come. This invention made online poker possible and the obvious knock on from that was in the interest not just in online poker but also in live poker too.

But online poker and live poker are connected even though each environment is dramatically different to the other. But people have always wanted to gamble because gambling brings with it excitement and excitement brings much needed relief in the lives of millions of people so let’s not forget that often overlooked fact.

Poker when studied and understood becomes more than just a hobby, it can become a passion. There can be nothing worse in life than being bored or having a feeling of emptiness and a lack of direction. Poker gives people so many benefits above and beyond merely making money that it is never going to disappear.

Firstly we will be witnessing a slow but sure increase in the number of people who are in fact computer literate. As the older generation dies off then everyone will be leaving school with vast knowledge of computers and the internet. This is bound to knock on to poker so I can only see more growth globally over the next few years. Then we have other areas of the globe getting into poker in the same way that the Chinese have with regards Snooker over the past few years.

There are so many untapped markets and so much potential still waiting to be discovered and what’s more, people love the mental combat that poker brings. It is akin to chess but with luck thrown in and that is what people like. But there are far more people taking the game seriously now and that is good for poker.

We have rakeback schemes, sign up bonuses and lots of other financial incentives that were not around years ago. Then of course we have the issue of sponsorship and it is far easier now for skilled players to find sponsors than ever before.
On my travels across the online poker scene I come across many sites and one such site was PokerInside (www.PokerInside.com) which actually went as far as to offer weekly sponsorships which was something that I had never encountered before as well as their payroll challenge. But sites like these are perfect for creating opportunities for good players to be able to play poker and utilise their skills and make money who otherwise wouldn’t have had the opportunity to do so.

But the fact of the matter is that the poker gravy train is showing no signs of slowing and why should it when there is a global population out there who absolutely love the game. But if one needed any more proof of the growing poker market then one only has to look at the latest figures for this year’s World Series in Las Vegas to see that poker is still very much on the up.

I have had people say to me in the past that the interest in poker is on the wane because they have written some poker book and it hasn’t made the number of sales that they had been expecting. Having written poker books myself then I am aware of that particular situation but it has nothing whatsoever to do with poker being on the decline.

The sheer volume of avenues now that players can get information from is frightening. Years ago all we had were poker books but there are simply hundreds and hundreds of them now and that is before we even look at other avenues. Now we have countless sites offering coaching, entire sites and forums dedicated to it, poker DVD’s, instructional videos and all the rest of it. It isn’t that poker is on the decline, it is because there are so many avenues available that poker books don’t reach the same numbers anymore. But the poker gravy train is still gathering momentum and if you want to get on it then now is the time to do it.
