This Thursday, The U.S. House Judiciary Committee approved a bill which would seek to criminalise poker’s online gambling industry by making it illegal for companies to transmit gaming funds.
The U.S already have various legislations regarding online gambling in place, but this most recent of bills, known as the Internet Gambling Prohibition Act, would also look to restrict those companies based abroad, sites who have been exploiting the current location loophole in order to escape censorship.
Although not expected to be given the nod at the House of Senate any time soon, the ban, if implemented, would hit a multi-billion industry head on and result in, what I consider to be, the suppression of over 70 million Americans.
True, many social problems are caused by the online gaming world and it is nigh on impossible to fully restrain the underage from playing illegally, but this doesn’t explain the lack of similar attention directed towards alternative online betting services. To the amazement of many a poker fanatic, less skill-based betting activities such as horseracing and online lotteries have been allowed to continue without the same legislation being threatened.
There are still several hurdles to be jumped before this bill can be fully implemented, but, for now, it reminds us that online poker may one day be unavailable to your Average Joe.
