APAT Scottish Amateur Poker Championships
Over the weekend of 30th-31st July 2011 APAT held the latest event in it's fifth season, sponsored by 888.com, with the Scottish Amateur Poker Championship held at Glasgow's Gala Merchant City Casino consisting of 131 players competing to win the £3,095 first prize and UKIPT seat
Courtesy of 888.com the individual winner of the Championship wins an entry to a UKIPT main event as part of an overall sponsorship package where APAT members have the chance to win added value throughout a packed season of Live and Online National Championships and leagues. In addition, each of the season’s seventy five amateur, professional and online tournaments are run completely registration free for players.
Early chip leader was Mark Lockhart, who qualifed for the event for £10 an was at the ehad of the affairs until the final stages of Day One. He was overtaken late on by APAT Online Champion Steve Bayliff and Bath's Suzanne Hayward. 26 players made it through the first day, with 13 of those to be paid.
At the end of Day One the five chip leaders, were as follows
Steve Bayliff 141700
Suzanne Hayward 107650
Jon Bannerman 104100
Stephen Hall 101550
Gary Purcell 92100
At the start of Day Two the aggression of the two most active players, Grant Speirs and Steve Bayliff was rewarded as they chipped up handsomely through the first few exits but with the deepstack structure affording plenty of play the more patient players were also able to manoeuvre through.
The final table line up was as follows:
1 Stephen Hall 125500
2 Jamie Kearns 125500
3 Jon Bannerman 198200
4 Steve Bayliff 208100
5 Mark Lockhart 84900
6 Alex Thomson 92100
7 Dean Cursley 99400
8 Grant Speirs 239600
9 Martin Turner 146200
First to exit was Alex Thompson losing a race with Pocket Sevens against the Ace-Queen of Jamie Kearns, an Ace on the river. Next, Mark Lockhart raised with pocket Kings and was called by Grant Speirs. The board came Ace high, with two spades. Lockhart made an excellent call all-in to a re-raise against Queen-Jack of spades only for Speirs to hit his draw, and for Lockhart to leave in eighth.
An unlucky Dean Cursley departed in seventh. Pocket Eights against Bayliff's Pocket sevens all in pre-flop, only for the lower pocket pair to hit a four-flush on the river. Jamie Kearns knocked out Steven Hall in sixth, pocket Jacks defeated Ace-Ten.
Five handed, there occurred the key pot of the tournament as the two chip leaders Speirs and Bayliff clashed. Speirs flopped the nut flush and Bayliff the flush too. All the chips in the middle on the flop, and Speirs won a pot containing half the chips in play to eliminate Bayliff in fifth. Speirs then, after a long period of to and fro, knocked out John Bannerman in fourth. Flopping the nut straight against top pair, blind on blind.
Play was prolonged three handed. The steady and meticulous Martin Turner and the comparatively conservative Jamie Kearns holding their own against the aggressive big stack Speirs. Eventually Speirs accounted for Turner with Turner flopping an Ace for top pair but Speirs flopping an open ended straight draw and turning a flush draw for good measure. The flush card came on the river to send Speirs heads Up against Kearns with a big chip lead.
Heads up was brief, unsurprising considering the disparity in chip counts. Speirs turned two pair with eight-six against Kearns flopped top pair and held on to win the title.
