Madness Ensues At The End of Day 4: WSOPE €10,400 Main Event

It was the penultimate day of the World Series of Poker Europe (WSOPE) €10,400 Main Event, deep in the heart of the Hotel Majestic Barriere. We started with 25 players and needed to establish our eight stars for our final table. It started slow, but ended in a jet-powered haze of madness in a flurry of hands in level 24.

Tony G (24th), Erik Seidel (21st), John Eames (20th) and John Duthie (18th) were a trio of stars who faded in the early part of the day and once we hit 16 players we moved location. Majestic Room #3 is a place any poker player in the world would want to play. The main feature table where the final will be played looks like it has been lifted from a James Bond movie - a simply stunning setting.

Two tables of eight were set up and the players went about their business, knocking each other down like very expensive skittles. After a series of short-stack double ups we had our first elimination. Brian Roberts ending the hopes of Michael Drummond. Then Jake Cody found {A-Hearts} {Q-Clubs} in an all-in encounter versus Chris Moorman’s {A-Spades} {J-Diamonds} and propelled himself into contention. From then on it was the Jake Cody show as he slowly moved himself into first spot.

Lehavot, Moreau Moseley and Guenegou followed Drummond out of the competition, before we experienced an insane 10-minute spell on both tables. Firstly, Elio Fox, Alex Dovzhenko and Arnaud Mattern were all-in pre flop in a pot worth 3 million and a spot as the chip leader beckoned.

“I have them,” said Mattern.

When the cards were turned over you could see why Mattern said what he did. Mattern had aces, Fox had pocket tens and Dovzhenko had ace-king. The flop was {10-Diamonds} {9-Clubs} {6-Diamonds}, Fox took an unlikely lead and it stayed that way when the last card was planted onto the deck like a stake in the heart of Mattern and Dovzhenko.

Meanwhile over at the feature table someone else was about to get lucky. Chris Moorman four bet his entire stack (940,000) in reaction to a Patrik Antonius three-bet and Antonius called. Moorman showed {A-Spades} {7-Clubs} and Antonius {A-Hearts} {Q-Diamonds}. The flop was {8-Hearts} {6-Clubs} {6-Spades} but then a {8-Diamonds} on the turn created a split pot. Antonius looked visibly annoyed, but that was nothing compared to his face when the {7-Diamonds} hit the river to hand Moorman a lifeline and put Antonius on life support. That left Antonius with 80,000 chips and Shawn Buchanan put him out of his misery a few hands later and we had our final table.
