Rubert Elder wins the Opening Event ($250,000)

Rupert Elder came into this final table with a big reputation and a chip stack to match. With over $1.5 million in career earnings, including the 2011 EPT San Remo Main Event title, and a massive chip lead at the start of the day, there was no doubt that Elder was the man to beat, despite the fact that this final table was loaded with talent.

Elder had to get past some of Australia’s finest, including the defending champion in this event in Brendon Rubie.  If a massive coinflip had gone Rubie’s way, then perhaps he would’ve gone close to back-to-back titles.  As it was, he had to be content with 5th place in a fine defence of his crown.

Rubie’s chips went to Martin Finger, who was our other EPT champion on this final table.  Finger played an aggressive game throughout, but in the end, couldn’t match his European counterpart.  Finger’s flopped top pair was pipped on the river as Elder spiked his straight to grab the victory.

And it won’t be the last you’ll see of Rupert Elder here in Australia.  He’s actually found himself an apartment out here and will be spending three months travelling around the country and playing poker events, not only here at the Aussie Millions, but on the ANZPT as well.

Congratulations to Rupert Elder, our Opening Event champion.  He takes home $250,000 and lays the challenge for the Aussies to bounce back in the coming events of the championship!
