2001 WSOP Main Event winner, Juan Carlos Mortensen, was recently invited to join the elite group of people that make up the European Poker Players Hall Of Fame.

Created by poker professional Bruce 'Elvis' Atkinson (right), the European Poker Players Hall Of Fame was set up to recognise poker players who have made great achievements throughout their careers.

And with just four added each year, Mortensen's induction will surely be a great honour, and one that he will saviour for the remainder of his poker career.

Recommended by his peers, the 34-year was actually born in Ambato, Ecuador and is often mistaken as being a native Spaniard. Of course, Mortensen spent a large chunk of his life in Spain after emigrating at the age of 15, but even this relationship was destined to come to an end as, come the late 1990s, he found a new home in America where he could pursue his new found love... poker.

A few years later and Mortensen was being crowned champion of the World as he won the 2001 WSOP Main Event, taking home not just the coveted gold bracelet, but a massive cheque for 1.5 million dollars.

Now married to wife and fellow player, Cecilia, 'The Matador' has become one of poker's most fearsome players, making many a final table and amassing over 4 million in earnings.

A truly great player and fully deserving of his Hall of Fame entry.
