I don't want a lot for Christmas
There is just one thing I need
I don't care about the presents
Underneath the Christmas tree
I just want it for my own
More than you could ever know
Make my wish come true
All I want for Christmas is...
Poker
Boy, I really need to get out more. Anyhow, Mariah Carey and painfully soppy lyrics aside, let’s take a look at what’s happening in the poker world this Christmas…
As is customary around this time of year, poker seems to be taking a much needed respite along with the millions of Christmas celebrators. However, even during these times of winter festivity, casinos and cardrooms are still staging the odd comp here and there with tournaments for those looking to swap the tedious family gatherings for a spot of poker.
For those of you that fall into that latter group, you need not panic as December is not only bringing £200-£300 Events at your local casinos (the Freezeout at Grosvenor Stoke would be a particular fave of mine), but also the Christmas Poker Cup in Ireland (16th – 17th) and the Welsh APAT at the close of the month (28th – 29th). And if that wasn’t enough to tie you over until the New Year, you may even fancy a brisk trip abroad to Sweden for the Christmas Poker Week at the Cosmopol Casino in Gothenburg. The Main Event will be a 20,000 Kroma Freezeout (which equates to around £1,500) and is sure to draw a big crowd.
If you are not a sick poker fanatic and decide to stick with the family in front of a chestnut roasting fire, then don’t fret, you won’t have too long to wait as January will be bringing festivals aplenty in the form of the Irish Poker Championship (4th – 7th), the 2007 Aussie Millions (4th – 19th) the Helsinki Freezeout (7th – 13th) and the inaugural event of the Grosvenor UK Poker Tour in Bolton (10th - 14th).
As a certain A-Team member and Rocky III star once said, “I pity the fool who misses the upcoming poker festivals”.
Okay, maybe I added the poker bit myself…
