Runner Up Heat - Must Win
I was clear in my head, there was no other option other than coming first. I still thought I had something to prove to myself after only working for half of my previous heat. Low and behold, no cards to shout about again. I can actually recall ALL the traditionally good cards I had over both heats. They were 88, 99, AK, AQ and AQ. I had no callers except for one AQ where I hit a Queen, bet out and they passed. I turned into Robina Hood again but a nastier version. My opponents this time were Debbie Berlin, Mags (Roy Brindley's better half), Rhowena, Chloe (an actress) and Lisa (a lovely American lady I had met the night before). I have to mention poor Rhowena here who had a horrendous previous 24 hours, had to work in the morning and arrived a little late and had to walk in after we had played a couple of rounds. She sat down fully composed and got on with the job at hand.
I was pleased with my game and will be very interested to see this when it airs. I think I have said once or twice before how my memory is looking back at events. I know I was all in after the flop half way through proceedings on a flush draw and hit my flush on the river! After that I bullied a little to try and stay ahead. I made it again heads up this time with Lisa, who played a solid game throughout. I gained a big lead against her and she said something that will stay with me for a while. She said “always the bridesmaid, never the bride.” That was how I saw things previous to this heat and was gonna make damn sure I was to be the one wearing a white meringue this time. So I look down at KJ and was moving no matter what. She beat me to it and went all in with 99. I spiked my J on the river and that was that. A first place, yes only 6 handed, yes only a runners up heat but I was so happy with HOW I did it. My main goals achieved – didn’t bottle it, wasn’t weak and hopefully gained some respect as a poker player not just a woman in a ladies comp.
I have to report to you what happened right after my exit interview. A very tall gangly fella came over and asked if he could take my picture. So I ask him what for, he replies in thick German accent “a German men’s magazine.” Errrm, ok then I say as we walk over to an appropriate place. “What like FHM?” I ask. “No like Playboy!” he replies. Stopped dead in my tracks. He did proceed to tell me that they had a very informative poker section..
