Victorious Victor

This week saw a Guyana-born (it’s in South America, tikay) store-owner from New York win over 1.3 million dollars in April’s World Poker Tour Event held at the Foxwoods Resort Casino in Ledyard, Conneticut.

Annand Ramdin, aptly nicknamed ‘Victor’, was the last man standing from 431 competitors and was understandably overawed by his feat when he lifted the trophy as the 2006 Foxwoods Poker Classic Champion.

In what became a final day void of any poker superstars, Ramdin overtook chip-leader Ed Jordan, before finally toppling Alex Jacob, dominating the final hand with A-J v K-J, to earn himself a cheque for $1,331,889.

Although the final table was made up of relative unknowns, the field itself was swamped by familiar faces, with the likes of Kathy Liebert, Daniel Negranu, Barry Greenstein, Carlos Mortensen, Erik Seidel, Freddy Deeb, Isabelle Mercier, and Surinder Sunar all adding their $9,700 to what became a prize pool of well in excess of 4 million bucks.

However, the only widely recognisable name in the top 40 was one Mr John Juanda who placed 31st for $12,525. Is this a sign that the amateurs are taking over, or were the pro’s just having an off day? Only time will tell, but perhaps the answer will appear on April 24th when the Bellagio’s World Poker Classic reaches it’s climax.
