"I Did It For The Title"

In the early hours of Tuesday morning, Dubliner Vincent Melinn became the PaddyPower Irish Poker Champion for 2006, picking up a nice beefy cheque and, more importantly, the coveted trophy.

“Its not about the money for me, its about the title,” claimed the 54-year old accountant. “I‘ve only ever played one tournament before and went out in that in my first hand but I knew from the early stages of this game I had a chance and I’m really so proud to have my name on the trophy.”

Although participating in only his second live tournament, Melinn also earned an additional 47k when he backed himself with a €250 each way bet at 150-1 with Paddy Power. Smart move indeed!

Second to the popular local hero was Londoner and festival frequenter, Ian Woodley. Following a host of recent runner-up spots, Ian is sure to have been disappointed with not lifting the trophy. However, the wedge of Euros now firmly implanted in his back pocket will surely soften the blow and ensure that he remains an ever-present face on the UK circuit.

The final table of the tournament was broadcast around Europe on Sky Sports 2 from the Royal Dublin Society and has been hailed by many of Europe’s top poker players as the best TV poker event ever. In fact, ever-popular commentator supremo Jesse May said, ‘It was just like Binion’s in the old days. The atmosphere and camaraderie was great.’

So, from the reaction of everyone present, it is clear that Europe’s oldest Texas Hold‘Em tournament was once again an unquestionable success, guaranteed to be just as good, if not better, next time round.

I was present throughout the week, and I must confess to being highly impressed by what I witnessed. A top notch comp and bundles of fun. Big thumbs up to tournament director, and previous winner, Liam Flood, and sponsers PaddyPower who were at the forefront of a tremendous week of poker.

Well organised, well run, and a great crack.
