Popular blondeite Charidimos Demetriou (more commonly known as ‘Harry’) this week took the runner-up spot at the 2006 Mirage Poker Showdown, earning himself a highly impressive $673,272.

384 poker fanatics handed over their 10 grand for the latest WPT Main Event, culminating in a 3.7 million prize pool, eventually spread among 36 players.

Among those at the felt were household names such as TJ Cloutier, Jennifer Harman, Barry Greenstein, and online high roller Patrik Antonius.

Whilst Mike Matusow, Layne Flack, Amir Vahedi and Allen Cunningham (the latter having his set of sevens painfully outdrawn by runner runner straight) took early baths, poker powerhouses Phil Ivey, Ted Forest, Daniel Negreanu (left), and Kathy Liebert all scraped through to the second day, although none were in as good a shape as Day 1 chipleader David Williams.

Although not quite to the same impressive extent, reigning champion Gavin Smith was running similarly well, eventually finding himself perched at 10th spot by the end of the day. However, this early form was later to elude him as he joined the losers’ bench on Day 2.

With many of the aforementioned players removed on Days 2 and 3, it was left down to the likes of John Juanda, Hasan Habib, and Alan Goehring to battle it out on behalf of the name players, but, whilst the latter managed to make 73k for his final table bubble to the bubble (yes, I've coined a new term), the formers could only reach 15th and 27th spots respectively.

Moving into the final table, and, inevitably, the remaining six players, it was Nashville born Stan Weiss (right) who held the chip-lead with in excess of 2.4 million in chips. Hot on his heels though was ‘The Grinder’s' brother Robert Mizrachi with just over 2 million.

Harry, however, was struggling in 5th position with $822,000, but this wasn’t to stop him climbing the ladder as the other competitors started to fall.

Soon, it was down to just Demetriou and Weiss, with the Brit holding the chip lead.

The final hand saw a potential split pot turn into a winner for Weiss as his K-5 spiked a five on the river to render Harry’s K-6 useless. Weiss, who had won 75k on the opening £500 No Limit Freezout event only several days earlier, was announced the victor and crowned Poker Showdown Champion. Accompanying the title was an understandably welcome cheque to the sum of $1,320,255.

But a big thumbs up must go to blondeite Harry who continues to impress at these high levels.
