What are your opinions on playing multiple tables at the same time?

Some people claim that since they're sitting around waiting most of the time, playing multiple tables and multitasking can net you more money. This means you can't concentrate as much on each game, however. Is there a balance to strike, say like only a couple of tables?

It entirely depends on your character. Some players like to play several tables at once just so that it helps them with their patience. If you only play 1 table you may get tempted into playing too many hands. This is sometimes a problem I have. To be honest though, I only usually play one table at once. I am usually reading my emails or writing my diary at the same time though, which helps with my lack of patience.

If I was just playing online for a living, it is hard to say how many tables I would play. If for example, as you suggest you have say 20% equity in each 1 table satelitte you play, it makes a lot of sense to play 3 or 4 at the same time. However, as you point out, if you are playing several tables at once, you cannot possible study your opponents to the same extent. So your equity will drop accordingly (and you may even turn into a losing player).

So it probably depends on what your natural game is. If you study the other players a lot, then you should probably stick to 1 or maybe 2 tables. If you are playing on autopilot, to the book, regardless of your opponents, then open up 4 or 5 tables and maximise your equity.
