Happy Birthday, Brindley!

It's been a while since I felt the urge to upload a Hand of the Week, but, on this occasion, I felt I was given no choice. The venue was the Regency Hotel in Dublin and the event was the Dublin EPT, the fourth of the Tour. With the buy-in being upped to €5,000, thereby creating an even larger prizepool, you'd perhaps expect to see less suicidal plays, but no siree, they're all still present in all their glory and Dublin was no exception.

It's Day 1A and we're still in the first level. I trundle over to the final row of tables only to be summoned by an excited Roy 'The Boy' Brindley, dressed in his usual bright red Laddies gear and wearing a broad gleam across his face.

Although at first I thought this expression of delight was a mere result of spotting the world (ahem) renowned snoopster amid the crowd of mere mortals, but as I glanced down at his rather hefty stack, I soon realised that this wasn't actually the case. In fact, Roy had just doubled, and in such a bizarre fashion that he felt obliged to share it with someone. My guess is that I wasn't the first to hear the story.

"I've doubled up, you won't believe this hand, listen to this. I raised to 200 from under-the-gun with J-9 suited. They all folded round to the Big Blind who made it 700 to play. I called and the flop came club club club, I couldn't believe it, I'd flopped a flush. He bet out 600, I re-raised to 2,800 and he moved all-in. I called, putting him on something like Aces or Kings. He could have me beat, but I'm not folding. Anyhow, he turns out 7-2 off!! I couldn't believe it. Seven high, he didn't even have a pair. Anyhow, I took the pot and knocked him out. What a weird move, he did have the two of clubs though."

Straight from the horse's mouth. A truly bizarre hand, I'm sure you'll agree. First level, one hand and Roy's away, on 20k and with a great chance of making an impact in this year's Dublin EPT. If only all players were this generous...
