Yeah i think i am right in saying first successful ditching of an airliner??

that's what I thought but not a single news report that I  saw mentioned that

At long last, the guy who drew the little graphics of the plane floating on the water on the safety instruction cards can sleep safe in the knowledge he wasn't wasting his time.

Totals

Life's saved by lifejackets: 50?
Life's that would have been saved by smoke hoods: 5000

Yet we still have lifejackets!

I also found this:
Quote
Planes can float, but the US Airways Airbus A-320 that crashed into the Hudson River Thursday had a better chance than most.
That's because it was equipped with a special device unique to Airbus planes that increased the likelihood it would stay on top of the water.
The device, called a "ditching switch," effectively seals the plane by closing valves and ventilation ports, a spokesman for the airline said.

Wonder how much that costs on each plane? Given the rate of successful ditchings, I'm amazed they bother, although I'm sure the passengers on this particular aircraft are quite pleased they did Smiley.

It was on Five Live, Bacon's show that hge had some expert on. In Japan or China, cant remember which, 1 passenger died. So Yes..

A plane landed in the Potomac last year, not sure how many died in that...

potomac incident was I believe a crash that ended with the plane in the river

looks like there've been 4 ditchings (on passenger flights) although 1 of those wasn't very successful (but to be fair it had been hijacked and had ran out of fuel)

The lifejackets arent standard all internal US flights, I dont know what the cabin crew do whilst on taxi.

The tail is the safest place to be if a plane breaks up when hitting water apparently, but having said that, I think I'd take my chances up top (or as far forward as I could afford) for the extra quiet and stability! If a plane I'm on is making a landing on water, I'll be sure to make peace with myself before it goes down.

I think its pretty poor how the captain is getting all the praise for this ditching, unless the FO completely froze it'll have been pretty essential team work that fluked the right circumstances for it not to break up, no?

You only need them when flying within 50 miles of water or something like that.

There was an episode of Quincy about this.

Quincy wanted lifejackets on the planes in case the planes in the internal flights in case the plane dropped into a lake.
