On average, the length of any River is able to be calculated simply. Take the distance in a straight line from beginning, inland, to where it meets the sea. Multiply it by pye. (3.147 etc....?). And that gives you the actual river length.

Is that really true, has anyone checked?

No idea Tom, & I have a feeling everyone's eyes glazed over, & they fell asleep at my inane geekyness!

The Simon Singh book was given to me, as a gift, by a very clever man indeed - Paul "Dotcom" Philips, the Yankee Poker player, who's "Extempore" blog (still running) used to be the best poker blog on earth. But now he's a Scrabble geek.

He swore that Simon Singh was correct, but I still need convincing.

Oh, & I'm reminded - by PM - that it's "pi" not "pye". Oops, I hang my head in shame.

Can you do the "pi" symbol - that wiggly thing - on a keyboard, by the way?

To which end, he told the story of the Cicada, which, as Red rightly deduced, & AndrewT explained perfectly, avoids predators breeding patterns by breeding every 17 years. How Nature managed to figure that, or evolve to it, is some astonishing miracle.

It's no miracle - that's nature, that's science.

Not all cicada follow that pattern, in many countries the cicada work on an annual cycle like many insects.  The ones that have evolved to use the 17 year cycle have been 'forced' into it through environmental pressures (the climate of the region, the predators, food supplies, etc.).  Other cicada in the area wouldn't have followed this 17-year cycle, and they perished.  Only the fittest (in terms of their ability to survive and reproduce in the environment they are in) survive.

Pye=Pi, from the Greek

A Japanese lad broke the world record by reciting Pi to 67,890 digits.

A geek to be admired that fella.

I would recommend this for some light reading

Π is the closest you'll get as an HTML character.  I don't know of any keyboard shortcut, but there's bound to be one.

pi has been calculated to at least 1.24 trillion digits, might be even more now. I'm not sure that doing that is the best use of one's life tbh

You'd end up going round in circles all the time.

My dear departed mother had a Pye Black Box which was a record-player(remember them?) which was her most prized possession.

I just thought you'd like to know that Smiley
