Title: Just been watching The Open on Sky Poker - LOL what a load of ....... Post by: LPM Champ on February 20, 2007, 12:15:07 AM Basically the 2 blokes hosting tonight are clueless. Its that Jonny Gould who use to do the baseball on five and some other bloke (so called EXPERT i think).
66 v KQ on a 6 7 K 10 board and they are both shouting "only a K can save him now"!!!!! LOL clueless. Then another 10 comes on the river and they are saying Full house for the guy with 66. Well what would a King on the river made???????????????? How do they get on TV. Well it made me laugh. Title: Re: Just been watching The Open on Sky Poker - LOL what a load of ....... Title: Re: Just been watching The Open on Sky Poker - LOL what a load of ....... Post by: byronkincaid on February 20, 2007, 12:30:22 AM I only watched it for 15 minutes but I thought Jonny was carrying the other guy who misread the board 3 times that I saw as well as the kinda cringeworthy 66 v KQ hand. Must be hard doing live TV of course. I just kept thinking about Totalise's point that you should have reached a certain standard of play before you try to teach people how to play. I somehow doubt the presenter plays 25/50 which tote was saying is where he thinks people are good enough to coach. He was saying how great some all in was when some guy had a straight and all it was gonna do was force worse hands to fold. Seemed a bit surreal to me. Not trying to rain on anyones parade. GL to all involved, must try to catch a bit of Kev tomorrow.

Post by: Longy on February 20, 2007, 12:38:13 AM I caught a bit of it tonight and im sorry to say some of the analysis was erm well how do i put this amateurish. Im not attaching blame to Johnny Gould who is their to anchor and present not do the poker, but the analyst was terrible IMO. My only hope is that whoever he is teaching sits down at my table tommorrow.
There was one hand a j 10 9 6 rainbow board and on the river it went bet then big raise and the original bettor managed to laydown the mighty j3o. The analyst was proclaiming this as a world class laydown, hmmm ok. Title: Re: Just been watching The Open on Sky Poker - LOL what a load of ....... Post by: tikay on February 20, 2007, 12:46:08 AM who was the analyst? Paul Musselle was the Expert this evening, he can also take the Presenter's role when need be & he does it well. Johnny Gould is a world-class Presenter in my opinion, he does not lay claim to be a huge Poker Expert, but he is all enthusiasm, energy & drive, & for those who work with him, he's known as the ultimate pro. His enthusiasm & oohing & aaring are not "for effect", he genuinely loves Poker & I think he conveys the spirit of the game wonderfully to the sort of player the show targets. They're still ironing out the creases, and it's not really aimed at the intermediate and beyond, which is what the guy from Sky came on here and said, (something that impressed me most). Post by: tikay on February 20, 2007, 11:08:42 AM It looks to me as if they are reading the cards backwards - are they? That would explain a bit of hesitation on their parts? Very tricky to explain that, Tracey. The "table" is "beamed" onto the studio floor, like what is known as, I believe, a "heads-up display". For technical reasons, it's beamed "the wrong way round", but that means when the Presenter & Expert look at it, it appears to be the right way round. On second thoughts, it's too difficult to explain! I hear what you all say about last night's expert, but technically, it's a very challenging show to work on. The Expert has a "clicker" too, to move the action on, & that makes life even more complicated. I will try & write up an article abouot how it all works, & it'll make it easier to understand the odd gaffe that gets made. The Studio is something to behold, 4 cameras whizzing around, a state of the art tracking system in the ceiling, working in tandem with each camera, it's mighty impresive stuff. And entirely green - walls, floors, everything, is bright green. Green! Title: Re: Just been watching The Open on Sky Poker - LOL what a load of ....... Title: Re: Just been watching The Open on Sky Poker - LOL what a load of ....... Post by: Claw75 on February 20, 2007, 01:17:52 PM I think the fact that this show is aimed primarily at beginners makes it all the more important that incorrect information is not given out, as it will be taken as fact by people learning to play the game.
I was watching one of the repeats the other night when Norman Pace was on. He commented that a guy holding suited cards who had flopped a flush draw was 4/1 to make his flush. He said that he shouldn't have called a post-flop bet from his opponent, as he was only getting 3/1 for his money. The turn didn't help, and he again said, 'he's 4/1 to make his flush'. The presenter said that he presumed the odds on hitting the flush were longer now as there was only one card left (don't know if he was trying to help Norman out of a hole without directly correcting him), and Norman said 'no, it's still 4/1'. Everyone makes mistakes, that's human, but on what is apparently supposed to be an informative poker show aimed at beginners, it would be nice to see mistakes pointed out (someone in the gallery having a word in the ear perhaps?) so that they can be immediately corrected. I have a question as well which I emailed in the other day but didn't get answered. When we see players' profiles it shows us the number of flops seen and the number of pots won. The presenters/commentators present this as number of pots won from the number of flops seen (eg wow he's seen 80 flops and one 60 of those pots) - I'd be interested to know if the pots won figure includes pots won pre-flop. Dilemma tonight with Kev being on as it clashes with Life on Mars and my Sky+ is playing up. Drama or comedy?? Title: Re: Just been watching The Open on Sky Poker - LOL what a load of ....... Post by: Sheriff Fatman on February 20, 2007, 01:36:45 PM Assuming all his flush outs are clean, the odds on the flop of hitting the flush on the turn are 9/47 = 19.1% ~ 4:1
The odds on the turn of hitting on the river are 9/46 = 19.6% ~ 4:1. I didn't see the programme you're referring to but I'm guessing this is what he was saying, so I'm not sure what the mistake you're trying to point out is with regard to the odds. However, his analysis does completely ignore implied odds so I don't necessarily agree with his reasoning about not calling. Also, if all the money had gone in on the flop and the player was guaranteed to see both the turn and river cards, then the relevant odds of him making his flush would be closer to 2:1, as he can hit on either the turn or river. Title: Re: Just been watching The Open on Sky Poker - LOL what a load of ....... Post by: Claw75 on February 20, 2007, 01:53:21 PM yep 4/1 to hit the flush on the turn, and 4/1 to hit on the river, but they way it was presented in this particular show that he had odds of only 4/1 to hit the flush at any point after the flop.
Title: Re: Just been watching The Open on Sky Poker - LOL what a load of ....... Post by: TheWhisper on February 20, 2007, 04:59:54 PM I saw the show for the first time last night but for only about 15 minutes.

Post by: Indestructable on February 20, 2007, 05:20:14 PM I have noticed this, but it must be a bit of a dillema. If you are selecting a hand to show, do you show a hand where nothing happens eg fold fold fold. Whereas PNL will show continuous play which shows interesting and uninteresting hands. Often they will end up talking about something else as nothing is happening. Not sure what the answer is. My main view for the moment is whether the show is entertaining and my answer is yes. Will it be perfect for poker "experts", probably not, but sure with practise that this will improve.

It seems they took Paul Musselle on as a Presenter, rather than an Expert, but due to rostering problems, he "stood in" as the Expert to help out. I gather that in future, they will try to keep him to his main role, which is as the Presenter - at which he has great experience, & is much respected. The guy got a bit of stick on Monday, fair enough, but it seems like it was not actually his fault. Just so's you know. You can start on me next. I'm ready & waiting...... ;nemesis; Title: Re: Just been watching The Open on Sky Poker - LOL what a load of ....... I've been keeping an eye on sky poker, during the breaks in PNL. I saw a show a few nights ago with Casper Berry ( a PNL bod & bloody good at it , for those of you that don't bother with pnl ) with some really, REALLY enthusiastic presenter, who really REALLY annoyed me. The show was funny, lively, informative ( I mean where else can we hear about the trams & trains in old Mill Hill town, sod the poker , we all know about hand values ). I especially liked the way that Tikay was claiming to have picked both guys in the HU as his choice of winner. I'm sure Helen liked that. Two other small points. Are Dan Hipgrave & Lynsey Horn a couple ? If so he is one lucky man. More importantly. I hear that Sky have poached several of the pnl team. Good. But I have heard that The GREAT Nick Wealthall isn't one of them. Now Tikay, I don't know what influence you have with the powers at the top, but I'm sure you've worked with Nick several times, & if he's not better than a few of the dweebs I've seen these last few days, then I don't know what to say. Admittedly he hasn't got the greatest face for TV, but with all due respect, you ain't no male model either ( well not for the last couple of years at least, I'm sure you were in the past ;) ) Up until last night I watched pnl, then switched to sky poker during the news breaks. I'm sure people posting comments aren't doing it with the sole intention to criticise: we have been asked to give feedback (which will inevitably include some constructive criticism) and told that the sky suits will be taking note. Hopefully if we all work together on this with open dialogue the show will get bigger and better and be a roaring success. I also think you'll find that the majority of people on here making points are the ones who are regularly supporting the show by watching, emailing in and playing in the games. By general concensus, Casper Berry's debut was excellent. The show needs a "blend" of styles, & he complements that blend perfectly, imo. They are still experimentng with the "who works best with whom" thing. Lynsey & Dan a couple? It would be wrong for me to comment either way, but it'd be a fool who tried to pull the wool over you guys eyes.... Believe what you see & see what you believe. They are both immensely likeable, & I've known Lynsey for a while, she's a good friend. I don't know Dan, but I believe he's a singer chappie or something. Now, & excuse the pedantics, but Sky Poker have not "poached" any PNL staff. I get your drift though. I am open & honest on blonde 100% of the time, but this one is a bit off limits for me. I'd just say that a number of individuals work for both shows, & both Sky & PNL are entirely comfortable with that arrangement. In fact, I have been invited to return to PNL, & with Sky's blessing & approval, have accepted. So, as one can see, the Management of both shows are entirely comfortable with the situation. They both recognize that it's good to have the "800's" section of Sky populated by several shows, we can both pull each other along. Nick Wealthall? I think everyone would agree that Nick is a top-notch Presenter. I really am getting beyond my remit now, so I'll leave it at that! Post by: Sark79 on February 21, 2007, 05:49:13 PM I must admit, I wondered who they were as well. You have to take it as it is, the SKY version is like ITV with celebs and PNL is more of a slick channel 4 style show. I prefer PNL, but I am sure the SKY version will be watched by many people and will continue to do well in the future. It is good that there are two different styles of poker shows on TV each night in my view

Post by: Miami Vic on February 22, 2007, 12:13:41 PM There's not just one sky bloke out there reading the forums - there's a fair few of us and we're taking careful note of the comments (good, bad and horrible). Thanks, Tikay, for keeping people abreast of what's happening. We're only a couple of weeks old and have got a long way to go and hope the service in all areas improves to your satisfaction over the coming months.
re. Paul Musselle - he's a really great bloke who threw himself in at the deep end to help us out. He'll be more on the presenting side in future and you'll see people like Tikak, Carlo, Mark Banin, Caspar Berry and Tom Sambrook appearing as experts. That should keep those of you who really know their game a bit happier. Keep the comments coming (but no swearing, Tikay doesn't like it!). it's norman pace here. i have been a big fan of blonde for a couple of years now. always tune in for live updates which are completely brilliant at all times. i've always been a bit reticent to post, however, cos you lot can be a bit scary for the average player. in fact there is a very high nerd quotient in the poker community in general, no names, you know who you are. i feel, as a member of the sky poker team, a bit exposed. suddenly, from nowhere, we're all spouting about the beautiful game LIVE on national telly. none of us want to look like idiots for our lack of poker knowledge so believe me, we're working very hard to improve on a daily basis. tikay has gone someway to explain how complicated reading hands is in the studio. there are still a few bugs in the system and unfortunately they are mainly to do with the feed to the studio floor that the presenters are seeing. paul musselle is a great bloke and a very, very good presenter. he's charming and intelligent and a total pro to work with. as for myself, i'm going to be presenting as well as analysing over the next couple on months. i tell you, every day i wake up and i know i'm going to work on sky poker, i feel excited. it's great to be in at the beginning of something like this and all of us feel that way. keep the constuctive criticism coming guys norman Title: Re: Just been watching The Open on Sky Poker - LOL what a load of ....... Post by: Martu on February 28, 2007, 04:25:53 PM The biggest issue I have with sky poker is that they don't always cover the end of the tournament. Seems a bit of a half-hearted effort if they can't be bothered to show the heads-up battle - one of the most interesting / skillful / lack-of-skillful (depending on who's playing) aspects of poker.
Title: Re: Just been watching The Open on Sky Poker - LOL what a load of ....... I guess it's hard for them to be too critical but it did seem last night the standard of play was shocking.
Title: Re: Just been watching The Open on Sky Poker - LOL what a load of ....... Post by: Miami Vic on February 28, 2007, 05:07:10 PM Sky Poker are trying to find a balance between running a solid, professional online/interactive game and presenting an entertaining TV show.
One of the reasons they don't get to the end of the tournament and see the winner is that play usually tightens up on Final Table, and, after three hours of live commentary on their feet, the presenters are cream-crackered. Tikay has to be given oxygen and a rub down between hand reviews. If the game hasn't finished by 0020 the producers have to take a toiugh decision whether to plough on or call it a day. The channel hopes to hit the right balance between speed of blinds and getting all the heads up action on screen as soon as they can. Please keep your comments coming to Blonde as the 'suits' are definitely listening! Title: Re: Just been watching The Open on Sky Poker - LOL what a load of ....... When I asked about the entry I got the answer we were not allowed to offer any cash prizes :dontask: checked all the e-mails and never a mention of anything about this and no mention on the shows when they were awarded. Being on the payroll you try to be positive about it but when they feel the need to take the p1ss out of their staff (who they get far more than their pound of flesh from already) then it's getting a bit much. Never mind though seems like you fellas are all having a great time tho :)up Don't think i'll bother with it much now but will probably watch a bit back and forth. Seen phil last night for a bit and thought he came across superb, very natural. Post by: Claw75 on March 01, 2007, 12:47:58 PM Are there any plans to make the software downloadable rather than having to play through a browser. this is something I'd be keen on too. I've had problems with the flash player causing my browser to shut down whilst I'm playing. Luckily it's not yet happened to me at a crucial point in a tournament, but unfortunatley the other night it happened half way through a cash hand where I had already invested a few quid into the pot, and was likely to get a big return once the hand had been played out. Of course, by the time I got it all up and running again the hand was long over and the other guy had the dosh I'd already put in. On the plus side, I've now won more than enough through skypoker to buy myself my much needed new Sky+ box :D Title: Re: Just been watching The Open on Sky Poker - LOL what a load of ....... Had a blast doing the show. Having seen how the tables are projected onto the floor now, it makes you appreciate how tricky a job it is to analyse the hands. I thought Carlo and Paul did a great job this evening. Its hard to get a feel for how the show is being seen by others, so it was nice to check blonde and see some positive feedback. Much appreciated! Sheriff Title: Re: Just been watching The Open on Sky Poker - LOL what a load of ....... Post by: Indestructable on March 02, 2007, 05:57:57 AM What was your final position?

rotflmfao It would make sense to start the tourney earlier, giving time for the conclusion to be aired. If it finishes earlier, some good hands (or series of hands) could be shown and analysed to provide more in-depth discussion. Maybe showing things like how the same cards can be played differently according to position, stack size, etc. I think the show is improving each night in terms of production. Obviously that will take a step backwards tonight and tomorrow - but that'll be due to the experts and the guests who are on. You can't polish a turd as the saying goes... Title: Re: Just been watching The Open on Sky Poker - LOL what a load of ....... If Sky really wanted a high quality poker show they should have invested in poker night live rather than bother with this amateurish production. Hi Zmich, Each to their own, & welcome to blonde. Yes it's sad to think of the demise of Poker Night Live, (which, fingers crossed, may yet return in some guise) but it's about being "fit for purpose". PNL had sponsors, & it was the Show's job to deliver players to their Cardroom. The numbers, for whatever reason, steadily declined. (Maybe I'm partly to blame....), but by the time the Show was pulled, the Nightly $10 Tourney was attracting just 10 or 20 runners. Very sad. Many of us, me included, had great affection for PNL, & we hope it'll be back. There was a hue & cry when it ended "it's a calamity, da de da de da", (I agree, as it happens) but where were these guys when the Show was only able to attract 15 or 20 Runners for it's Prime Time Tourney? The Sponsors were clearly not getting their money's worth, so push came to shove. "The Open", on Sky Poker Channel 846, now delivers almost 1,000 players PER SHOW, each and every evening, counting "The Open", "Velocity" & "Scary", plus the SNG's. The cardroom, starting from a clean piece of paper in late January - no players, no liquidity, no network - is now in profit already, & has 1,000's of players Online regularly, well ahead of target. And with the income, they are building a Channel, not a Show, there are 2 Shows as of now, & a third about to start, with more in the pipeline for this year. So, "amateurish production" (in fairness, in Production terms, it's high-quality, but if you mean poor to watch, that's a different thing) it may be, "hopeless" too pehaps, but it's "fit for purpose", & does it's job well. You'd also be amazed (I know I am) by how many folks I meet around Cardrooms & even in shops & the like who say they enjoy the show. Note I am biased, as I am connected with both the Channel, & the Show. Hope you enjoy blonde. Title: Re: Just been watching The Open on Sky Poker - LOL what a load of ....... Post by: da_poker_monkey on June 21, 2007, 09:02:33 PM It's fine to say the show is fit for purpose and that it does a job, but how successful could it be if they cut out just some of the worst bits? Why be happy with 1000 regulars when for a lil extra effort you could get 1500.....2000...2500.....
Title: Re: Just been watching The Open on Sky Poker - LOL what a load of ....... Post by: tikay on June 21, 2007, 09:25:11 PM It's fine to say the show is fit for purpose and that it does a job, but how successful could it be if they cut out just some of the worst bits? Why be happy with 1000 regulars when for a lil extra effort you could get 1500.....2000...2500..... Fair point. They do try to review & improve, have weekly meetings, just generally, bit by bit, make it better. To be fair to them, they are just 4 or 5 months down a very long road, & the Show will change, evolve & generally get better. The nightly numbers still show a nicely rising graph, & they will - without a doubt - reach the numbers you suggest. But it's tough to accommodate more players on the nightly featured Tourneys until certain technical gizmos have been bolted on to the Cardroom & Show. As the Sky Suits read all this, what, by your definitrion, are "the worst bits"? They genuinely want & need feedback, and as long as it's not overtly insulting to individuals, (perhaps I'm exempt there, get stuck in to me by all means....) I'm sure they'll be pleased to see what bits viewers think need some work. Title: Re: Just been watching The Open on Sky Poker - LOL what a load of ....... Post by: jizzemm on June 21, 2007, 09:42:50 PM The worst thing about sky poker for me is the software. I hate it, hate it, hate it.. sorry to say it so much, but the whole concept is excellent, the presenting is good (in general), better whe Norm, Helen, tikay are on, maybe less robotic if thats a fair comment, but the others need time, and they are improving week by week, and am happy to watch whomever is on, as to be honest it's entertaining.
Not sure if they are thinking of getting a downloadable software, but I sure hope, as the 2 or 3 times i have played, I have always had problems getting my table or when I get moved from table to table, i can miss 5 minutes of the game, and with the blind structure their is, u cant miss that much. Sorry if the subject of software may have come up earlier in the thread, only read about 9 pages. As far as anything else goes, sky poker is good, it looks new, the advice is good, maybe the only other thing before i go (as I have it on now), is that sometimes some of the presenters make it kind of obvious what is going to happen by talking about the outcomes before they happen rather than after the hand is finished. oh that got long and serious.. Keep the good show going sky people.. Title: Re: Just been watching The Open on Sky Poker - LOL what a load of ....... Post by: Miami Vic on June 21, 2007, 10:18:22 PM I may not be a Sky suit, but I'm part of their team, so thanks for the comments. We are, as ever, reading and taking the best advice back to the office for consultation. There's some really useful criticism here. "Why isn't Sky Poker the same as PNL?", asks a disgruntled short term postee. The only answer to that is "Because it's not".
Can you clarify which bad bits we should cut out? Not sure if that's a reference to The Open or software problems. Title: Re: Just been watching The Open on Sky Poker - LOL what a load of ....... Post by: tikay on June 21, 2007, 10:22:55 PM The worst thing about sky poker for me is the software. Keep the good show going sky people.. And THAT Sir, is EXACTLY the kind of feedback they want. As to the Presenters & Analysts being "robotic" (to a greater or lesser degree) that's quite interesting. Because of the technical side of things - it's a seriously complex Show to produce & direct - we have to work to a Running Order - over 90 items - & a sort of script, & it's not really technically feasible to get too far outside of that. I'm luckier than most, as I've been with them off-screen since October, so I know what the aims & aspirations are, what they are trying to achieve, & what they want from us guys, I also am quite friendly with the Production Team. So I push the boundaries a bit - as far as I dare - with off-beat twaddle & blather, just to liven things up, do my "own" little Competitions, just try make it different, and that's easier for me as an amateur, than it is for those who are Pro TV Presenters, or who have not been there quite so long, & are finding their feet. But as time passes, the personalities of everyone will come out. Then I'll be for the tin-tack, no doubt, but hey, it's been more fun than I can tell ya. The Production Crew, you know, are so enthuisiastic. They are all about 12 (well, OK, mid-twenties) but they just get on with it, & get the job done. Sky can & should be very proud of that Crew. Post by: Claw75 on June 21, 2007, 10:34:41 PM One thing I was musing the other day is that I don't think I've ever seen a hand analysed on the show where the play didn't go all the way down to the river (please correct me if I'm wrong). It would be good to see a number of other hands where some clever play has taken a pot on the flop or the turn. I'm not sure if it's a regular feature now, but I recall seeing in some shows where the action at a single table is followed for 4 or 5 hands in a row. Personally, I'd like to see all the studio analysis done in that way. Maybe take one table every couple of levels and just talk through a few hands, even if some of them are just 'ordinary'.

Hi Claire, At present, every night, they do a spot where they concentrate on a random table & just take a bunch of consecutive hands, & take them as they come, "ordinary" or not. Is this what you mean? And as for non-stop "take them as they come, uninterrupted table coverage", well yes, I think that's on the way too, but in a different format/vehicle - maybe even Cash games. All in good time, they'll get there. They already know that they can't just show whizz-bang-pop hands, so they are starting to mix it up nicely now. At first, it was a matter of getting to grips with the technology (you've seen it!), but now they've got that pretty much dusted, they are widening the brief. I also think the hand analysis is the best part of the show, and my only other grumble is that I would like to see more hands early on (perhaps they could be whizzed through a bit quicker?). Another good point Claire- "whizzing through the hands quicker". They have done a software trick & can now do the Hand Reviews faster, & thus squeeze in more hands. Every time I started to blather on last week about trains & snails & whatnot, Kara gave me another hand to review. I think the girl has got my number. And isn't Kars a real STAR? Kara is bloody wonderful!! I must admit, I enjoy watching it when Kara, Helen, Tikay or Norman are on. The right balance between entertainment and poker. It's a difficult balance between 'good poker' and a show that can be aired over 3 hours. I'm sure it will develop over time. I don't play the Open that frequently - the structure doesn't suit my tight game. But I do play it for fun occasionally - especially when there's a fellow Blonde on the show. Funny this thread got re-igniting today as i played it last night for the first time in ages i normally avoid it due to nature of the game is pretty tough to play for me. I don't mind the quick structure as it is not hugely different to Tribeca MTT's with 8 min levels but unfortunately Tribeca probably gave you about 3 times the hands per level (a guess but certainly far more). The software/website being so slow in the amount of hands dealt is the big problem for me as i would like to play it more with a bit more room/time as there is huge value in a lot of the play there IMO. Total pipedream but can you imagine the traffic on the site if they had the old Tribeca software a lot of the people here are missing i suspect? I was that short stack who pushed with 66. I had been card dead for ages and had only survived as long as I did by pushing with nothing at the right time to pick up the blinds. Was naturally gutted to see table chip leader with KK and hit a K on the flop as he had been bullying the table and always hitting his hands. Given the blind structure there is unfortuantely no choice but to push with very marginal hands. I think at the time I pushed I was in 11/12 place on less than 5 bb. I appreciate that the format has to fit with the time slot of the TV show, but an extra 30-60 minutes durration to the length of the tourney from tweaking the blind structure a bit would make the more exciting latter stages much less of a crapshoot. I know this has been mentioned in other threads a few times previously but I think if a method could be worked out to slow down the last stages of the tourney that it would be much more enjoyable and attract more people (no point until the maximum number of players is raised beyond 600) Starting an hour or so earlier and slowing down the blinds would give the production crew a chance to pick the select hands (by select I mean normal play for a lot of them including hands which don't always go to the river) which could be shown in the first part of the show. I know the reason against this has been stated that there is a chance the studio guests would be out of the tourney before the TV show has even started, but to be honest now that I have been watching the show for a long while I am only interested in the guests play when they progress further into the competition. Maybe if they do go out early their hands could be shown prior to letting us know they were out, that way we would not be expecting the hand shown to end up with them losing and might actually prove to be more interesting as a viewer. (just dont implement any such crazy ideas prior to the end of july when I am on a winners night as a guest!) Let's face it, the guests on the show seem to be playing a smaller and smaller part more recently and more focus is rightly placed on the hand analysis so maybe this format wouldn't have as much of a negative effect on the show as it previosuly would have. One general comment on the show for the sky suits, by far the best guest on the show so far was on the primo night with Action Jackson. His input was great and his observations very astute. Particularly when the chip leader and 2nd place were sat adjacent to each other and both were trying to assert themselves as the table boss with raises and reraises. I'm so glad I got moved from this table after I pushed the chip leader about alot as it was only a matter of time until she picked up a big hand against me and a train wreck ensued! In short(!) keep doing what you lot are doing, keep the new features and formats coming as this is what keeps everything as fresh as can be and stops the show becoming too tired. Look forward to meeting some of you in Brum tomorrow, any oats supplied will be greatly recieved! Title: Re: Just been watching The Open on Sky Poker - LOL what a load of ....... So good points here. Just want to re-( re-re- ? ) reiterate the idea on slowing down the blinds towards the last few tables. It's always good to see the FT last at least a little while. That, added to hand on hand action ( !? ) would give us, at least an idea, of who is a lucky donk, & who is at least semi-skilled. And to the hand analysis ; I'm an ex pnl'er and think you can see the difference when these guys get their teeth into it. but especially I wanted to say what a great move it is to get Nick W involved. I always had him down as vastly underated at the analysis lark, and it great to see the way he can keep things light, but still chuck in the odd nugget. Whoever decided to put him on with Kara as a first show deserves a bonus, they always work well together. Also , for the future. I see a some nights there are only 2 guests. Why not go all the way and have some nights with just the one, really special guest. Harping back to the ex pnl ( I'll tell you what's wrong with it - It's dead, that's what's wrong with it ). Nick Persaud did some GREAT analysis in the late days - Maybe Foxy could do the same on his return from his 'hols'. To get a TOP pro on a show like that would be rather cool. Also, who was responsible for getting Jesus, The Unabomber & The Magician on. Ffs give him a job on sky - sharpish. And finally. Steve Davis. You get him on for an evening, with Helen & Casper. I'd watch it. Title: Re: Just been watching The Open on Sky Poker - LOL what a load of ....... The time spent chatting to the guests and reviewing their hands etc could be better spent, I feel, on the analysis of the game. The door would also be left open then for the games to start an hour or so before the show broadcasts, allowing for either a slower structure towards the end of the games, as some have suggested, or for a larger field of players.

Ok scrap my previous ideas then if it would leave me exposed as a lucky donk! I don't want my donk tactics revealed lol. I like the idea you put forward of having one really special guest. This could maybe be them entering the tourny if it starts an hour befor the show goes out then so be it. Chances are that a good player would still be in by the time it goes to air. If they are out then they could assist more actively with hand analysis like action jackson did on primo night. I think people would much prefer to see someone they know as a top player instead of minor celebs (as most guests tend to be). Obviously I exclude all blondites from this comment as they are all major poker icons! Maybe keep winners night once a week as this gives the punters a good feeling of involvment, most of the blondes who have been guests would still have a route onto the show this way. Get rid of guests all together as Claw suggests on most nights, with the budget (are they payed by way of used pairs of Tikays socks?!) being spent for the week on a sunday or primo night on a higher calibre of guest. As exciting as it may be to watch people going all in on the last few tables because of the blind structure with mediocre hands the final tables would have much better poker played at them if the tourny started an hour or so earlier with slower blinds. Sky clearly want a donk fest tourney and people entertained not to be acutally informed by a skilled player :P Title: Re: Just been watching The Open on Sky Poker - LOL what a load of ....... I assume that the 'celebrity' guests are meant to bring non-poker playing viewers into the web of addiction. If 'er from Hollyoaks plays the game, well I'll give it a go, sort of idea. I've always had the feeling that Sky wants to appeal to non players first, and satisfy existing players second. As long as it brings more & more people into the game, it can't be a bad thing. But I must admit, having a kiddies tv presenter on could possibly be aiming at the wrong age group. Next week on Jeremy Kyle - Tikay taught my 3 year old never to chase a gutshot. How the hell am I meant to beat him now ? Title: Re: Just been watching The Open on Sky Poker - LOL what a load of ....... I see you are clearly referencing moi. Seriously though, I do accept peoples varying views on the show, hell, even I have to admit that the structure leaves little room for what players call "Proper poker", but Sky are aiming for a different demographic to the regular players. "The Open" is intended as a fun, introduction to poker, for players who want to learn, maybe improve their game and have an evenings entertainment for the price of a couple of pints. The analysis provided by some experts is excellent, and to be honest, the standard of play has improved since it began, and possibly seeing what the other guy had in a hand you were involved in can reinforce a new players decision process when they see they made a good read and great laydown. Sky also want this to be a community, we all see the same people playing and with the introduction of the live events, they are being given the oppotunity to meet their online opponents and possibly make new friends. "The Open" may not be perfect, but then, when have we players ever completely agreed on any comp ? Just accept the show for what it is and for what it is trying to do. How can you learn to play poker when its a crabshoot after 20mins? I accept the opens like that I don't play it, but it would be nice and beneficial to sky poker to have at least 1 MTT a night, non-televised to have a decent non-donkfest structure. I object, strongly, & take offence at that comment. Sometimes it IS right to chase a Gutshot. Bring the lad up right, I say. Parents, huh! ;) Title: Re: Just been watching The Open on Sky Poker - LOL what a load of ....... Post by: OatFedGoat on June 22, 2007, 12:05:05 PM No I didn't mean you ) How can you learn to play poker when its a crabshoot after 20mins? I accept the opens like that I don't play it, but it would be nice and beneficial to sky poker to have at least 1 MTT a night, non-televised to have a decent non-donkfest structure. I think that may well be the best solution. The open is obviously working in it's current format (although I prefered the older 1500 stack with slower blinds) and is consistantly brining in new players which is probably Sky's aim. With the Open bringing in new players, they may wish at a later date go and play in a slower structure non televised event (maybe the top 10 finishers could be namechecked like velocity used to). A few more higher buy in MTT's wouldnt go amiss. All these £1.20, £3.30 etc entry can be fun but there is not much scope for winning much. I guess we all have other sites of course for other things and maybe Sky knows this and is not trying to compete for a reason. Title: Re: Just been watching The Open on Sky Poker - LOL what a load of ....... Post by: Miami Vic on June 22, 2007, 06:48:17 PM Thanks for all the notes. My perspective on the guests (and we prefer calling them guests rather than celebrities) is, yes, they illustrate a mix of skills, abilities and backgrounds and represent players of all levels who might be watching and can empathise with a bad beat, or a first time go at The Open, and so on.
Generally, the guests have been good talkers and have contributed to the fun side of the show - to try and offer a balance between analysis and the more light hearted side of the game. I think most of the guests have done a great job, whether they are a genuine name or not. I also think the players have been a great asset to the show. And nearly everyone wants to come back. Action was a great guest but we also get comments that truly good players scareoff the less confident newbie. But we'll see more like him in weeks to come. Just to let you know, I've passed on a lot of comments - both positive and negative - to the Sky Poker team, and you may see some of your sage advice being implemented in coming weeks. Good luck to everyone travelling to Birmingham. Sorry I can't be there, I'm on a stake-out in Fort Lauderdale. Title: Re: Just been watching The Open on Sky Poker - LOL what a load of ....... Simon Young - stop promoting your own services via a third party forum! Tikay, I'm surprised tyou let that kind of thing through. And I'm not in Henley or Wimbledon. I flew into Felthamtown last night from Orlando airport. Having seen the weather, I'm flying straight back. Title: Re: Just been watching The Open on Sky Poker - LOL what a load of ....... I do happen to think thats a bloody good idea... it gives people something extra to play for whilst adding in the loyalty, rewards the regular players etc..
Prizes could be anything... Addition to bankroll, invite to the next sky live ( PLEEASSSEEE hold this in Manchester), invites onto the show etc Title: Re: Just been watching The Open on Sky Poker - LOL what a load of .......
